How Cambridge Credit Counseling Works
Cambridge Credit Counseling focuses on simplifying repayment for people with multiple unsecured debts. Its approach is structured, transparent, and designed to reduce financial pressure.
Initial Consultation
The process starts with a confidential counseling session at (866) 598-9334, where a certified counselor reviews your income, expenses, and debts. During this stage, the counselor explores strategies such as budgeting help, education resources, and the option to enroll in a Debt Management Plan (DMP) that may lower interest rates and consolidate monthly payments into one.
Case Evaluation
If the DMP is a good fit, Cambridge provides an estimated monthly payment, projected timeline, and potential concessions from creditors, such as interest rate reductions and waived late fees. According to Cambridge, clients typically receive an average 14 percentage point reduction in interest rates, allowing many to repay their debt within approximately four years. Results vary depending on each creditor and client profile.
Program Selection
Most clients choose a DMP, but Cambridge also offers HUD-certified housing counseling, bankruptcy education courses approved by the Department of Justice’s Executive Office for U.S. Trustees (EOUST), and student loan guidance.
Execution
Once enrolled, clients make a single monthly payment to Cambridge, which then disburses the funds to creditors. Many creditors extend benefits as long as clients stay on plan. Regular statements allow clients to monitor progress and verify distributions.
Ongoing Support
Cambridge provides periodic check-ins to adjust the plan if your financial situation changes. Counselors also offer financial education to improve long-term money management skills, consistent with best practices promoted by the FTC and the National Foundation for Credit Counseling (NFCC).
Who Cambridge Credit Counseling Is Best For
Cambridge Credit Counseling is best suited for:
- Individuals with multiple unsecured debts such as credit cards, medical bills, or personal loans who need a structured, nonprofit-guided payoff plan.
- People carrying high interest rates who stand to benefit from the creditor concessions Cambridge negotiates through a DMP.
- Homeowners facing financial hardship who need HUD-certified housing counseling or foreclosure-prevention guidance alongside debt management.
- Anyone navigating bankruptcy who needs DOJ-approved pre-filing or post-filing education courses as a legal requirement.
- Consumers who prefer a nonprofit model focused on counseling and education rather than a sales-driven debt settlement approach.
Cambridge Credit Counseling is generally not the right fit for tax debt, student loans as a primary concern, or debts that are secured (such as mortgages or auto loans), since DMPs apply only to unsecured obligations.

Is Cambridge Credit Counseling Legit?
Yes. Cambridge Credit Counseling is a legitimate, nonprofit credit counseling agency with multiple independent third-party trust indicators.
- BBB: A+ rating with a long history of accreditation.
- Charity Navigator: Four-star rating (96%) indicating financial transparency and operational accountability.
- NFCC Membership: Affiliated with one of the most reputable credit counseling associations in the United States.
- DOJ Approval: Certified by the Department of Justice to provide required bankruptcy counseling.
The FTC advises that reputable credit counseling agencies are usually nonprofit, clearly explain their services and fees, and do not make unrealistic promises. Cambridge Credit Counseling aligns with all of these standards.

Cambridge credit reviews on the BBB and Charity Navigator specifically praise the organization’s responsiveness and fee transparency before enrollment.
Cambridge Credit Counseling BBB Rating
Cambridge Credit Counseling holds an A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau and maintains full BBB accreditation. This rating reflects a consistent record of resolving customer concerns and operating within ethical nonprofit business standards over many years of service.
In addition to its BBB standing, Cambridge has earned a four-star rating (96%) from Charity Navigator, one of the most widely used independent nonprofit watchdog organizations. The Charity Navigator score evaluates financial health, accountability, and transparency — areas where Cambridge Credit Counseling Corp. consistently performs at the top of the nonprofit credit counseling category.
Together, these ratings serve as independent confirmation that Cambridge Credit Counseling is a trustworthy, accountable organization for consumers seeking structured debt relief guidance.
Cambridge Credit Counseling Cost
As a nonprofit, Cambridge Credit Counseling keeps its fees regulated and transparent. The initial counseling session is free of charge, with no obligation to enroll in any program afterward.
If you enroll in a Debt Management Plan, a monthly service fee applies. Nonprofit DMP fees are capped by most state regulations and generally range from $25 to $75 per month, depending on your state and the number of enrolled accounts. Clients experiencing financial hardship may qualify for reduced or waived fees.
Unlike for-profit debt settlement firms, Cambridge Credit Counseling does not charge a percentage of your enrolled debt or collect large upfront fees. Cambridge recommends requesting a full written breakdown of all costs before signing any agreement — a practice consistent with NFCC and FTC guidelines for responsible credit counseling.
Final Verdict: Cambridge Credit Counseling Review
Cambridge Credit Counseling stands out in the nonprofit credit counseling space for its DOJ-approved bankruptcy education, HUD-certified housing counseling, and Debt Management Plans that deliver real interest rate reductions. Few agencies offer such a complete range of services under one roof, and its A+ BBB and four-star Charity Navigator ratings consistently support its reputation as a trustworthy organization.
That said, a Debt Management Plan is not a quick fix. It requires commitment, stable payments, and a willingness to follow a long-term financial plan. Before enrolling, request a written cost breakdown, compare multiple agencies, and confirm the program timeline fits your goals.
Overall, Cambridge Credit Counseling Corp. is a credible, well-rated, and transparent option for consumers seeking structured support to manage or eliminate unsecured debt.

Very good experience It was so easy to get my debt paid off by making 1 monthly payment. I received a monthly statement from Cambridge showing all the payments dispersed. They were extremely easy to work with, even when I had to call to get other accounts added later. Cambridge talked to my creditors so I didn’t have to, and most changed my interest to 0%.

Someone actually took the time to fix the issue I have sent emails and made several calls regarding miscommunication w creditors and Cambridge and it took four months for someone to resolve it. Tara Cross was very attentive and made the effort no one I previously spoke with. She went above and beyond to rectify the issue in less than a week.
