Chase Freedom Unlimited is a solid no-annual-fee cash back card for people who eat out often and want one simple card, and it ranked #3 among no-fee bank rewards cards in J.D. Power's 2026 satisfaction study. The tradeoff is the 1.5% base rate: 2% flat cards from Citi and Wells Fargo pay more on most spending, and this card charges a 3% foreign transaction fee. It shines if you also hold a Chase Sapphire card, since you can move its points there. Avoid carrying a balance after the 15-month intro period, when the variable APR runs 18.49% to 27.99%.

Chase Freedom Unlimited, step by step
Check offers and apply
Apply online or in a branch. Offers can differ by channel, and the $200 bonus is not available if you received a new cardmember bonus on this card in the past 24 months.
Spend $500 in 3 months
Purchases count toward the bonus; balance transfers, cash advances and cash-like transactions do not.
Earn cash back as points
Rewards post as Ultimate Rewards points, where 100 points equal $1, and they do not expire while the account is open.
Redeem with no minimum
Take a statement credit or deposit to a Chase account, buy gift cards or travel, or move points to a Sapphire card you hold.
Pay in full before the intro ends
Interest at 18.49% to 27.99% starts on any remaining balance after month 15, so plan payoff before then.
Chase Freedom Unlimited value for the price
For many people, yes. It costs nothing to hold, pays 3% on dining and drugstore purchases and 1.5% on everything else, and gives you 15 months at 0% on new purchases and balance transfers. Someone who spends $500 a month at restaurants earns $180 a year in that category alone, versus $120 on a 2% flat card.
It is a weaker pick if your spending is mostly groceries, gas and bills, which earn just 1.5%. A 2% flat card like Wells Fargo Active Cash or Citi Double Cash earns a third more on that spending. And with a 3% foreign transaction fee, leave this card at home when you travel abroad.
How Chase Freedom Unlimited rewards work
Chase tracks your cash back as Ultimate Rewards points, and 100 points equal $1. You earn 5% on travel booked through Chase Travel, 3% at restaurants (including takeout and eligible delivery) and drugstores, 2% on eligible Lyft rides through September 30, 2027, and 1.5% on everything else. Categories depend on how a merchant is coded, so a pharmacy counter inside a supermarket may earn only 1.5%.
There is no minimum to redeem for a statement credit or deposit. Watch the Amazon Shop with Points option: Chase values points there at $0.008 each, so 100 points buy only 80 cents of goods. If you hold a Sapphire Preferred or Sapphire Reserve, Chase lets you combine points between your own cards with no fee, and those cards can transfer points to travel partners. Combining cannot be undone.
Fees, APR and the intro offer
The 0% intro APR lasts 15 months from account opening on both purchases and balance transfers. After that the variable APR is 18.49% to 27.99% depending on your credit, based on a 7.00% prime rate. Balance transfers cost $5 or 3% of the amount, whichever is greater, if done in the first 60 days, and $5 or 5% after that. Chase notes the account may not be eligible for balance transfers at all.
Other costs: cash advances carry a $10 or 5% fee and a 28.74% APR that starts immediately, foreign purchases cost 3%, and late or returned payments cost up to $40. A payment 60 days late ends the intro rate and can trigger a penalty APR of up to 29.99% that may last indefinitely.

Card benefits
Chase lists purchase protection on new items for 120 days against damage or theft, up to $500 per item (90 days for New York residents), extended warranty that adds a year to U.S. warranties of three years or less, trip cancellation and interruption insurance up to $1,500 per traveler and $6,000 per trip, and secondary auto rental collision coverage in the U.S. You also get 6 months of DashPass if activated by December 31, 2027, after which you are billed the monthly DashPass rate unless you cancel. Most benefits are run by outside companies with their own claim rules and time limits.
Who gets approved
Chase does not publish a minimum credit score, and approval and your APR depend on your creditworthiness and other factors. The $200 bonus is not available if you already have this card or received a new cardmember bonus on it in the past 24 months. Apply only if you can use the card responsibly; each application adds a hard inquiry to your credit report.
Complaints and how to avoid problems
The CFPB received 7,027 credit card complaints about JPMorgan Chase from October 2025 to October 2026, across all Chase cards, which reflects in part how many cards Chase issues. The most common issue was a problem with a purchase shown on a statement, followed by other account features and terms, and advertising or promotional offers. Chase answered all of them on time and closed 760 with monetary relief.
To avoid trouble: dispute a wrong charge in writing within 60 days of the statement it appeared on, as federal billing rules allow, keep screenshots of the bonus terms when you apply, set up autopay for at least the minimum, and cancel DashPass before the free period ends if you do not want it. If Chase does not fix a problem, file a complaint at consumerfinance.gov/complaint.
Who should pick a different card
Pick a 2% flat card if you want the most cash back on ordinary spending without thinking about categories. Pick a card with no foreign transaction fee, such as Capital One Quicksilver, if you travel abroad. And if you already carry credit card debt, a low-rate or balance transfer card may save you more than any rewards card.

- Citi Double Cash Also 2% on everything, a better fit if you mainly want a flat rate and are moving a balance rather than making new purchases. Read review
- Capital One Quicksilver Same 1.5% base rate but no foreign transaction fee, so it is the better card to take abroad. Read review
- Chase Sapphire Preferred Worth adding, not replacing, if you travel: Freedom Unlimited points can be moved to it and then transferred to airline and hotel partners. Read review
