How BestGuide Rates and Ranks Companies

Updated July 7, 2026

Methodology

How we rate

Every ranking on BestGuide follows a documented, repeatable process. No provider can pay to improve their score.

Our scoring criteria

Every company reviewed on BestGuide is evaluated against five criteria applied consistently across all categories.

Criterion What we evaluate
Reputation Industry standing based on accreditation status, complaint history, licensing, and regulatory record
Services Range and quality of services offered, including program structure and support model
Transparency How clearly and upfront a provider communicates fees, processes, and terms
Customer Satisfaction How consumers respond when they reach a provider, measured by follow-through rate and client feedback signals
Scalability The provider’s capacity to serve new customers, including responsiveness, staffing, and ability to handle demand

For some categories, additional criteria specific to that service type are layered on top. Debt relief reviews also weight industry accreditation (AFCC, IAPDA) and track record of resolved debt. Tax relief reviews add IRS representation credentials and licensed professionals on staff. These category-specific factors are documented on each buyer’s guide page.

All criteria are weighted and combined into a single BestGuide Score out of 5.

Data sources

BestGuide scores are built from publicly available, independent sources, cross-referenced to reduce reliance on any single input. Our analysts also review each provider directly, manually going through the company’s own website to assess how transparent it is about pricing, fees, and program terms.

Source What it informs
Company websites (direct manual review) Fee and pricing transparency, published terms, program structure, and how clearly key details are disclosed
Industry accreditation bodies AFCC, IAPDA, AM Best, and category-specific credentials
State licensing records Authorization to operate in specific states
Public consumer sentiment and social media Recurring complaint themes, customer feedback signals, and how providers respond to customers in public channels
Publicly available outcome data Settlement rates, case resolution data, published program results

When independent sources conflict, we weight data that is verifiable and not self-reported. Material discrepancies are noted in the review.

Review cycle

Every page on BestGuide displays a “Last reviewed” date. Reviews are updated on a minimum annual cycle. Re-reviews are triggered earlier when any of the following occur:

  • A company’s accreditation or licensing status changes
  • A significant volume of new consumer complaints is reported
  • A provider changes its fee structure, ownership, or service model
  • New regulatory or legal action is taken against a company
  • A material shift in public consumer sentiment, up or down

When a score changes, the “Last reviewed” date is updated to reflect the most recent evaluation.

Conflicts of interest

BestGuide has commercial relationships with some of the companies it reviews. These relationships are part of how BestGuide operates, and they are disclosed in full on our Advertising Disclosure page.

The short version: BestGuide earns affiliate commissions and works with providers on visibility. The criteria above reflect our editorial evaluation of each company.
