BambooHR is easy to learn, but small teams often find the $250 monthly minimum and the extra cost of payroll, benefits and time tracking add up. Others leave over setup help, support after the sale, or reporting that does not bend to their process.

  • Backed by Paychex, one of the largest U.S. payroll companies
  • Well-rated employee mobile app with on-demand pay through Paycor Wallet

Cons

  • Weak public reviews: 1.6 out of 5 on Trustpilot, with repeated complaints about support response times
  • Time and scheduling, benefits admin, recruiting and workers' comp are add-ons that raise the monthly bill
  • No published pricing once you pass 50 employees
  • Promotion terms include a 13-month commitment, and year-one discounts understate what you pay later
  • The pricing page shows two different sets of bundle prices, so the quote is what counts

How we chose

We started from the complaint themes and comparison table in our BambooHR review, then compared six HR and payroll providers on listed starting price, whether payroll is included, whether prices are published, contract terms and BBB or Trustpilot records, using each company's pricing page checked October 12, 2026 (Gusto's live page blocked automated checks, so we used an October 9, 2026 archived copy that matches our Gusto review). The 10-person costs are our arithmetic from listed prices. The site orders picks by our star rating. We did not sign up for or test these services. Read our full methodology.

Why people look for BambooHR alternatives

BambooHR’s reviews praise how easy it is for staff and employees to learn, but complaints cluster around five problems (Trustpilot 3.3 out of 5 from 154 reviews, per our review):

  • Cost for small teams and extra add-ons. Companies with 25 or fewer employees pay a flat $250 a month for Core, and payroll, benefits and time tracking are quote-only add-ons. Look at: Gusto, Justworks or Paycor, which include payroll in published prices, or Zoho People’s free edition for 3 users.
  • Thin onboarding and setup help. Some customers pay extra for implementation. Look at: a PEO such as Justworks, where the provider handles more of the setup and compliance.
  • Support harder to reach after the sale. Ask any vendor in writing what support channels and response times your plan includes.
  • Time-off calendar and leave balances hard to read, and time-tracking bugs. Test the time-off and attendance screens during a trial or demo.
  • Reporting and workflows less flexible than expected. Look at: Rippling or HiBob, which are built for larger, more complex setups.

Free and low-cost options

If you have only a few employees, you may not need a paid HR system yet.

  • Zoho People free edition. Free for up to 3 users in the US, with employee records, time off and document storage.
  • Your payroll provider’s HR tools. Gusto, Justworks and Paycor include employee profiles, documents and onboarding with payroll, so a separate HR system may be unnecessary.
  • A shared spreadsheet and folder. Free for a handful of people, but you lose approvals, reminders and access controls, so protect it carefully because it holds personal data.

What BambooHR alternatives cost for a 10-person team

Monthly cost for 10 employees using each company’s listed entry price, as listed October 2026, before taxes, add-ons and promotions. We did the math; companies may quote differently.

Company Entry plan Monthly cost, 10 people Payroll included
BambooHR Core, flat rate at 25 or fewer $250 No, quote-only add-on
Gusto Simple, $49 + $6 per person $109 Yes
Justworks Payroll, $50 + $8 per employee $130 Yes
Paycor Basic, $99 + $5 per employee $149 Yes
Zoho People Free edition Not available (3-user limit) No
Rippling, HiBob Quote Not published Yes, as a module

BambooHR’s HR features run deeper than the HR tools bundled with Gusto or Justworks, so compare what you actually use, such as performance reviews or compensation planning.

How to choose a BambooHR replacement

  1. Decide whether payroll moves too. If you are happy with your payroll provider, look for an HR system that integrates with it. If you want one bill, choose a provider that includes payroll.
  2. Count your people and locations. UK staff point to HiBob; several countries point to Rippling; US-only small teams can start with Gusto, Justworks or Paycor.
  3. Ask for the full price. Get quotes in writing, including setup fees, add-ons and the price after any promotion ends.
  4. Check the contract. Prefer month-to-month terms until you are sure. Paycor’s promotion adds a 13-month commitment.
  5. Plan the data move. Export employee records, time-off balances, documents and reports from BambooHR before your access ends.

How to cancel BambooHR

  1. Check your contract type. Month-to-month subscriptions can be cancelled any time and end at the end of that month. Extended-term subscriptions renew for 12-month terms, cannot be cancelled early, and prepaid fees are not refunded.
  2. Export your data first. Download employee records, documents, time-off history and reports.
  3. Submit the request. According to BambooHR’s help center, the account owner, a full admin or a billing contact goes to Settings, then Account, then Account Info, and selects Cancel BambooHR Account, then completes the request form.
  4. Keep the confirmation. Save it in case you are billed again.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best alternative to BambooHR?

For small US teams that want payroll included, Gusto has the lowest listed entry price at $49 a month plus $6 per person. Justworks suits teams that want a PEO with benefits, and Rippling or HiBob suit larger or international companies that are willing to get a quote.

Is there a free alternative to BambooHR?

Yes, for very small teams. Zoho People's free edition covers employee records, time off and documents for up to 3 users in the US. Above that, you will pay for any HR system.

How do I cancel BambooHR?

The account owner, a full admin or a billing contact submits a cancellation request under Settings, Account, Account Info, according to BambooHR's help center. Month-to-month plans end at the end of the month you cancel; extended-term plans cannot be cancelled early. Export your data first.

Can I get out of a BambooHR annual contract early?

Generally no. BambooHR's terms say extended-term subscriptions cannot be cancelled early and fees paid are non-refundable, unless BambooHR fails to provide the service and does not fix it within 30 days of written notice.

Which BambooHR alternative is cheapest with payroll?

Using listed entry prices for a 10-person team, Gusto Simple comes to $109 a month, Justworks Payroll $130 and Paycor Basic $149, before taxes, add-ons and promotions. BambooHR Core is $250 a month flat for 25 or fewer employees, with payroll quoted separately.

Does BambooHR include payroll?

No. Payroll is an add-on for US employees only, priced by quote. BambooHR offers 15% off when you bundle Payroll and Benefits Administration.

What is the difference between an HR system and a PEO?

An HR system such as BambooHR stores records and runs HR processes, while you remain the only employer. A PEO such as Justworks becomes a co-employer, handling payroll, benefits and some compliance on your behalf, usually for a higher per-employee price.

Which alternative works for employees outside the US?

HiBob runs native UK payroll and Rippling offers payroll in several countries. Justworks lists international contractor payments and an employer of record service at $599 per employee a month.
