Before you pay a gift service, consider booking the experience or buying the brand's own gift card directly, which avoids purchase fees, price locks and redemption accounts. Among the services we compared, Virgin Gifts fits a specific US experience with a flexible date, Tinggly fits a recipient who travels or lives abroad, Uncommon Goods fits a physical gift you may need to return, Giftcards.com fits a brand gift card or a scheduled eGift, and Packed with Purpose fits a branded corporate send. Choose by how the recipient will use the gift, then check the expiration, fee and refund terms before you buy.
This guide is for anyone choosing a gift service for a birthday, a holiday, a thank-you or a company send, when you want more than cash but do not know exactly what the recipient wants. It covers three kinds of service: experience vouchers (Tinggly, Virgin Gifts), stored-value gift cards (Giftcards.com), and curated physical gifts for individuals (Uncommon Goods) and companies (Packed with Purpose).
We compared what each service charges to start, whether the gift expires or loses value, how long you have to get a refund, and what the BBB, Trustpilot and the CFPB show about complaints. The facts come from each company's published terms and help pages, checked in October 2026, and from our full review of each company. We did not buy or redeem the gifts.
Below you will find the comparison table, our picks, what the services cost, how to choose, the terms to watch (expiration, fees, refunds and price locks), corporate gifting rules, and the direct alternatives.
Direct options before you pay a gift service
Every service in this guide sits between you and the thing the recipient gets, and each adds a cost or a condition for that. Three direct routes avoid most of them:
- Book the experience directly. Buying a class, tour or hotel night from the operator lets you see real dates and the operator’s own price first, and the recipient deals with one company if plans change. Print the confirmation as the gift.
- Buy the brand’s own gift card. Amazon, Target, Starbucks and most retailers sell their cards with no purchase fee and handle problems themselves. Under federal rules, gift card funds cannot expire for at least five years, and most brand cards have no fees at all.
- Give cash or a bank transfer. No fee, no expiration, no inactivity charge and no redemption account. You lose only the presentation.
A gift service earns its cost when it does something these cannot: let the recipient choose from a catalog (Tinggly, Virgin Gifts), deliver a card by email on a schedule or in a design (Giftcards.com), curate and ship an object with a return policy (Uncommon Goods), or brand and ship dozens of boxes on one date (Packed with Purpose).
What gift services cost
Prices below are as listed on each company’s site in October 2026 and come from our reviews.
| Service |
What you pay |
Extra costs |
| Tinggly |
Boxes $79.20 to $439.20 (list $99 to $549) during a 20 percent promotion; gift cards in any amount |
$10.00 for a physical box; the recipient pays any difference for a costlier experience or a price rise |
| Virgin Gifts |
Each experience priced on its own; eGift cards $25 to $9,999.99 |
None published; after 9 months the recipient pays any price increase at booking |
| Uncommon Goods |
Item price plus shipping: Economy $7.95 to $16.95, Standard $8.95 to $20.95 by order value |
Faster shipping from $14.95; Perks membership fee shown only at signup, after a 14-day trial |
| Giftcards.com |
Card value ($10 to $250 on Visa and Mastercard cards) plus a $2.95 to $6.95 purchase fee; brand cards have no fee |
Physical shipping, never refunded; $4.95 a month on Virtual Accounts after 12 idle months |
| Packed with Purpose |
Under $50 to $150-plus per gift |
Shipping at checkout rates; logo branding $3 to $7 per gift |
Two patterns matter. Experience boxes sold by tier (Tinggly) include the company’s margin and the free exchange and no-expiry features in the price, so some recipients find the same activity cheaper direct. Stored-value cards look fee-free but are not: Visa and Mastercard gift cards carry a purchase fee wherever you buy them, and the digital versions at Giftcards.com add an inactivity charge after a year.
How to choose a gift service
Start with how the recipient will use the gift, then check the terms that could cost them money.
- Where does the recipient live? Virgin Gifts, Giftcards.com and Uncommon Goods serve US recipients (Uncommon Goods also ships internationally through a partner). Only Tinggly’s vouchers work across 100-plus countries. For a US recipient in a smaller city, check the catalog with their location set before buying an experience box; Tinggly reviewers in some towns found few options.
- Does a date matter? Neither experience service shows live dates before purchase. If the gift is for a specific weekend, book the operator directly or send a gift card and let the recipient choose after checking dates.
- Could the gift sit unused? Tinggly and Virgin Gifts vouchers never expire, but Virgin Gifts locks the price for only 9 months and Tinggly can ask for an extra payment if prices change significantly. Giftcards.com Virtual Accounts start charging $4.95 a month after 12 idle months.
- Might you need a refund? Tinggly allows 30 days and Virgin Gifts 14 days on unbooked vouchers, paid to the purchaser, not the recipient. Giftcards.com eGift cards and Virgin Gifts eGift cards are non-refundable. Uncommon Goods takes most items back at any time; Packed with Purpose takes nothing back.
- What does the complaint record show? Uncommon Goods and Blackhawk (Giftcards.com) are BBB accredited with an A+. Virgin Gifts holds an A+ without accreditation. Tinggly has no BBB profile because it is based in Lithuania. Packed with Purpose has no BBB profile and no Trustpilot reviews, so there is no independent record to judge.
- Is this a company send? Packed with Purpose is built for recipient uploads, scheduled ship dates and logo branding; Tinggly’s terms give corporate orders a shorter 14-day refund window.
What to watch: expiration, fees, refunds and price locks
Expiration
Federal rules under the Credit CARD Act and Regulation E say gift card funds cannot expire for less than five years from purchase or last load. Tinggly and Virgin Gifts go further and set no expiration on vouchers or gift cards. The exceptions in this guide are Tinggly single-experience vouchers, which convert to Tinggly credit if not booked within a year (the value is kept, the specific experience is not), and Giftcards.com Visa and Mastercard Virtual Accounts, which expire 7 years after purchase. Physical Giftcards.com Visa cards have a valid-thru date on the plastic but the funds do not expire; the issuer, Pathward, replaces the card.
Fees
Visa and Mastercard gift cards carry a one-time purchase fee of $2.95 to $6.95 at Giftcards.com; the site says Visa requires every retailer to charge one. Brand cards have no fee. Dormancy fees are allowed under federal rules only after 12 months without activity, no more than once a month and only if disclosed before purchase; Giftcards.com’s $4.95 monthly charge on idle Virtual Accounts sits inside those limits. Tinggly charges $10.00 for a physical box. Uncommon Goods charges shipping on every order unless you hold a Perks membership, which has an annual fee shown only at signup. Packed with Purpose charges $3 to $7 per gift for logo branding and passes shipping through at checkout.
Refunds
Refund windows are short and conditional. Tinggly refunds an unbooked gift within 30 days of purchase (14 days for corporate orders), minus the box shipping fee, to the purchaser. Virgin Gifts refunds an unused, unbooked voucher within 14 days, to the purchaser; its eGift cards are not refundable. Giftcards.com merchant eGift cards are non-refundable once bought and shipping is never refunded. Uncommon Goods offers free forever returns on most items but no exchanges, with up to three weeks for processing and exceptions for some custom orders, fine jewelry and live plants. Packed with Purpose accepts no returns and handles damage case by case. Once an experience is booked, the operator’s cancellation terms apply at both Tinggly (48 hours notice) and Virgin Gifts, and a recipient who does not meet an age, height, weight or health requirement at Virgin Gifts is not refunded.
Price locks and price differences
A voucher that never expires can still lose value. Virgin Gifts locks the price for 9 months; after that the recipient pays any increase when booking. Tinggly’s recipient pays the difference for a costlier experience or a price rise, and the company may request an extra payment when prices have changed significantly. If the recipient may hold the gift for a year or more, a gift card for a dollar amount or a brand card loses less than a specific experience voucher.
Corporate gifting: minimums, branding and lead times
Packed with Purpose is the only service here designed for company orders. There is no minimum for its standard gifts or for logo branding, which runs $3 to $5 per gift on the box or the card and $5 to $7 on both. Custom products, inserts and special inclusions require orders of 50 or more gifts and are quoted by its Gift Concierge; volume discounts are not published. You upload recipient names, addresses and messages, pick a future ship date, and pay in full before fulfillment. Domestic orders process in 1 to 3 business days and travel 1 to 6 business days from Utah. Because there are no returns, the company’s own advice applies: order a sample box first, confirm the branding proof and ship date in writing, and leave a week of buffer before the event.
Experience vouchers and gift cards also work for bulk sends but with different rules. Tinggly gives corporate orders a 14-day refund window instead of 30. Giftcards.com caps merchant eGift orders at $2,500 per checkout and $5,000 per day and can schedule delivery by email or text. Virgin Gifts eGift cards run from $25 to $9,999.99 and are non-refundable.
Other options we compared
Our reviews looked at these alternatives alongside the five picks. We do not review them in full.
- Giftory: a US-only experience marketplace with 6,000-plus experiences, non-expiring vouchers and a gift card from $18, per its homepage; its refund policy is not published there, and its Trustpilot score is 4.2 with 13 percent one-star reviews.
- Etsy: a wider selection of handmade and personalized items, often cheaper than Uncommon Goods, but each seller sets its own return policy and Etsy’s own Trustpilot score is 1.4 from 21,432 reviews.
- Store gift card racks: Blackhawk and InComm cards at grocery stores typically charge $3.95 to $6.95 on a Visa or Mastercard card, about the same as Giftcards.com at full fee, with brand cards free.
- Your bank or credit union: many issue Visa gift cards at the branch for a similar or lower fee, with a person to call if a card fails.
- Museum stores, local galleries and the makers themselves: similar curated gifts to Uncommon Goods, often with no shipping if you pick up; the Impact Partners page at Packed with Purpose names the makers behind its boxes.
