Quick verdict

Paycor and Paychex are now the same company: Paychex bought Paycor on April 14, 2025, and runs it as a standalone business unit with its own platform. The real choice is between two product lines. Paycor publishes prices for businesses under 50 employees (from $99 a month plus $5 per employee) and is built around payroll plus HR software and analytics. Paychex quotes every package and offers more ways to hand off work, including HR advisors, a 401(k) and a PEO, so the better pick depends on whether you want software or a service.

Ownership: what the Paychex deal changed

Paychex completed its all cash purchase of Paycor HCM on April 14, 2025, at $22.50 a share, about $4.1 billion in enterprise value. Paychex said the deal strengthens its position with larger, upmarket clients.

For customers, little has changed so far. Paycor’s acquisition FAQ says Paycor customers remain on the Paycor platform, keep their service teams and that Paycor operates as a standalone business unit of Paychex, with Cincinnati as its main location. The same FAQ says Paychex has teams looking at technology integrations, so a future combined product is possible but not announced.

Practically, this means you are choosing between two separate products with separate contracts, prices and support teams. A quote from one does not bind the other, and it is reasonable to ask for both and compare them line by line.

It also means the BBB complaint picture overlaps. The BBB lists Paycor as “Paycor A Paychex Company,” and the complaint counts on the Paycor and Paychex profiles were identical when we checked, at 565 in three years, so treat that number as one shared record rather than two.

Price: published versus quoted

Paycor is one of the few HCM vendors that publishes small business prices. For businesses under 50 employees, as listed in October 2026:

  • Basic: $99 a month plus $5 per employee, $59 setup
  • Essential: $149 a month plus $6 per employee, $99 setup
  • Complete: $199 a month plus $7 per employee, $199 setup
  • HCM: $199 a month plus $12 per employee

For 25 employees that is $224 a month on Basic and $374 on Complete, before promotions. The current offer is 50% off for six months, one month of free payroll and waived setup, but Paycor’s promotion terms bar cancelling within 13 months, and credits are charged back if you do. The pricing page also shows a second set of bundle prices, so confirm the exact plan on your order form. Above 50 employees, Paycor quotes.

Paychex publishes no prices at all. Its Basic, Foundations, Advanced and Complete packages all say Request Pricing, and time and attendance, onboarding, HR analytics and garnishment payments are listed as add-ons.

If you have fewer than 50 employees, Paycor’s list prices give you a benchmark to bring to a Paychex quote.

Features: software suite versus service menu

Paycor is built as a human capital management suite. Every small business plan includes unlimited payroll runs and tax filing, and higher plans add onboarding, time off tracking, HR tools, analytics and performance features. Time and scheduling, benefits administration, recruiting and workers’ comp cost extra. The Paycor Mobile app includes on-demand pay through Paycor Wallet.

Paychex is built as a menu of services. Its payroll packages scale from self setup with online support to managed setup with a dedicated payroll specialist. On top of payroll it sells HR Pro (HR guidance, safety and 401(k)), Paychex HR PEO (Paychex becomes co-employer and handles benefits administration and payroll), insurance and retirement plans. Paychex says it is the top 401(k) provider by number of participating employers.

Paycor fits companies that have someone in-house to run HR and want better software. Paychex fits companies that want to hand off HR work, especially smaller firms without an HR person, or firms that want a PEO to access group benefits.

Neither is a strong choice for paying staff in many countries. Paychex offers global hiring through partner companies, and Paycor is focused on U.S. payroll.

Support and reviews

Public reviews are weak for both brands. On Trustpilot, Paycor rates 1.6 out of 5 from 166 reviews (84% one star) and Paychex rates 1.7 out of 5 from 854 reviews (90% one star). The recurring complaints are similar: slow support, payroll or setup errors, unexpected fees and trouble cancelling.

Paychex is explicit about how support scales. Its 2026 package chart lists online support on Basic, enhanced phone and email support on Foundations, premium support on Advanced, and a dedicated payroll specialist on Complete. If you want a named person, budget for the top package.

Paycor assigns a service team by plan and runs a structured implementation. Its own reviews point to setup as the riskiest stage, so ask for the implementation timeline, who owns data migration and what happens if your first payroll is late.

Employee apps rate well on both sides: Paychex Flex has 4.8 out of 5 from 576,013 App Store ratings, and Paycor Mobile has 4.5 from about 33,700. These scores mostly reflect workers checking pay stubs.

Whichever you choose, get the support level, every fee and the cancellation terms in writing before you sign.
