Clover's own site advertised rates as low as 2.3% plus 10 cents with a 3-year contract on its $450 credit offer, while Wells Fargo's Clover pages list 2.40% to 2.60% plus 15 cents with no contract. It is a legitimate, widely used POS owned by Fiserv, one of the largest U.S. payment processors, and its countertop and handheld devices are well liked. The problem is pricing: the same hardware comes with different processing rates, monthly fees and contract terms depending on who sells it. Trustpilot reviews average 1.9 out of 5, mostly about fees, contracts and support, so get every fee and the cancellation terms in writing before you sign.

Buying direct from clover.com, Clover advertised in-person rates as low as 2.3% plus 10 cents, and its $450 statement credit offer required a 3-year contract. Other banks and resellers set their own prices and terms.
Clover, step by step
Pick a seller
Buy from clover.com, your bank or an independent reseller. The seller sets your rates, fees and contract.
Choose hardware and plan
Pick devices (from a Go reader or Compact to a Station) and a software plan for retail, restaurant or services.
Sign the merchant agreement
Read the processing rates, monthly fees, PCI fee, term and early termination fee before you sign.
Set up and take payments
The seller ships the devices; you load items, staff and taxes, then take card payments that settle to your bank account.
Cancel or switch
Check your agreement for the term and any termination fee. Leased hardware may have its own lease you cannot cancel.
Clover legitimacy and licensing
Yes. Clover is the point of sale brand of Fiserv, one of the largest payment processors in the U.S. Fiserv got Clover when it bought First Data in 2019. Banks such as Wells Fargo resell Clover under their own merchant services, and Clover also sells direct at clover.com.
Fiserv’s handling of Clover is the subject of a securities class action filed in July 2025 in federal court in New York. Investors allege that Fiserv moved as many as 200,000 merchants from its older Payeezy platform to Clover from late 2023 to mid 2024 and misled investors about Clover’s growth. Fiserv says it disagrees and will defend itself. The case is about investor disclosures, not a ruling against Clover’s merchant contracts.
Clover pricing explained
There is no single Clover price. What you pay depends on whether you buy from clover.com, a bank or a reseller.
- Through Wells Fargo: software from $0 (Starter) to $89.95 a month (Restaurant Growth) for the first device, plus a $9.95 merchant account fee and a $10 PCI compliance fee each month. In-person cards cost 2.60% plus 15 cents under $40,000 a month, down to 2.40% plus 15 cents at $80,000 and up. Wells Fargo lists no early termination fee.
- Direct from clover.com: Clover advertised in-person rates as low as 2.3% plus 10 cents, and a $450 statement credit that requires a 3-year contract.
On $30,000 a month in card sales, the gap between 2.3% plus 10 cents and 2.6% plus 15 cents is about $90 a month in percentage fees alone, plus 5 cents more on every sale. Ask every seller for the effective rate on your real sales mix.
Clover hardware costs
Wells Fargo lists the Clover Compact countertop device at $349 and the Clover Station Solo at $1,799, both as one-time purchases. Other sellers may lease the same devices monthly. A lease can cost far more than buying over its full term and is often a separate contract you cannot cancel early, so ask whether you are buying or leasing.
Clover hardware generally works only with Clover’s system, so if you switch processors later, you may need new equipment.
What customers say about Clover
Recurring themes across the review sites and complaint records listed above, not individual quotes.
Common praise
- Devices are modern and easy for staff to use
- Handles daily sales well once set up
- Strong mobile dashboard apps
Common complaints
- Long hold times and slow support
- Unexpected fees, including PCI and cancellation fees
- Funds held without clear explanation
- Multi-year contracts and termination penalties merchants say were not explained
- Outages and third-party integration problems
Clover complaints
Clover’s Trustpilot score is 1.9 out of 5 from 2,210 reviews, with 54% one star. The repeated complaints are long hold times, surprise fees (PCI, subscription increases and cancellation fees), funds held without a clear reason, outages, and 36 to 48 month contracts merchants say were not explained during the sale. The positive reviews mostly praise the hardware itself.
Many complaints trace back to the seller rather than Clover. Before you sign, get the processing rates, every monthly fee, the contract length and the early termination fee in writing, and keep a copy.
Contracts and cancellation
Your contract terms depend on who sold you Clover. Wells Fargo lists no early termination fee for its card processing. Clover’s own $450 credit offer requires a 3-year agreement. Independent resellers set their own terms, which may include multi-year agreements, termination fees and hardware leases.
To cancel, read your merchant agreement for the notice period and fees, contact the company that holds your merchant account (not always Clover), and return or pay off any leased hardware. Business accounts are not covered by most consumer protection laws, so the contract is what protects you.
Who should skip Clover
Skip Clover if you want pricing you can verify online without a sales call, if you sell mostly online, or if your card volume is small enough that monthly software, merchant account and PCI fees would eat into your margin. Low-volume sellers often do better with a no-monthly-fee option such as Helcim.
Alternatives to Clover
- Helcim No monthly software fee, no contract and published interchange-plus pricing, which is easier to audit than Clover's seller-by-seller rates. Read review
- Shopify POS Better for shops that also sell online, with published rates and month-to-month billing. Read review
- Toast Built only for restaurants, with a $0 starter software plan. Read review
- Get a written quote from your current processor Many banks resell Clover; comparing two written quotes for the same hardware is free and often shows a big gap in fees.

Frequently asked questions
Is Clover a good POS system?
The hardware and apps are well regarded, and it works for retail, restaurants and services. The weak spot is pricing and contracts, which vary by seller and drive most complaints.
Who owns Clover?
Fiserv owns Clover. It came with Fiserv's 2019 purchase of First Data.
How much does Clover cost per month?
Through Wells Fargo, software runs $0 to $89.95 a month for the first device, plus $9.95 for the merchant account and $10 for PCI compliance. Other sellers set their own prices.
What are Clover's processing fees?
Clover.com advertised in-person rates as low as 2.3% plus 10 cents. Wells Fargo lists 2.40% to 2.60% plus 15 cents in person and 3.30% to 3.50% plus 15 cents online or keyed, depending on monthly volume.
Does Clover require a contract?
It depends on the seller. Wells Fargo lists no early termination fee, while Clover's own $450 credit offer requires a 3-year contract. Ask for the term and termination fee in writing.
How much is Clover hardware?
Wells Fargo lists the Clover Compact at $349 and the Clover Station Solo at $1,799. Prices differ by seller and whether you buy or lease.
Why are there so many bad Clover reviews?
Most one-star reviews describe surprise fees, held funds, slow support and long contracts. Many relate to how a bank or reseller sold the system, so compare written quotes before signing.
Can I use Clover hardware with another processor?
Generally no. Clover devices run on Fiserv's Clover system, so switching processors usually means new hardware.
Is Clover better than Square or Toast?
Clover offers more hardware choices across business types, Toast is built mainly for restaurants and food and beverage retailers, and Shopify suits stores that sell online. Clover's prices are harder to compare because each seller sets its own.
