Generali travel insurance's Premium plan offers $250,000 medical and $1,000,000 evacuation, and only Premium covers pre-existing conditions or allows Cancel for Any Reason, which reimburses 60% of the penalty and must be bought within 24 hours of your first deposit. It is legitimate: plans are sold by CSA Travel Protection, doing business as Generali Global Assistance, and underwritten by Generali U.S. Branch (NAIC 11231), and the BBB rates the seller A+. Claims service is the weak spot: the BBB lists 633 complaints in three years and 39% of Trustpilot reviews are one star. In June 2026 Generali renamed its global assistance unit Redion; the US site still sells under the Generali name and contracts are unchanged.

Generali travel insurance legitimacy and licensing
Yes. The plans are sold by CSA Travel Protection, doing business as Generali Global Assistance, which was known as CSA Travel Protection before the Generali rebrand and cites a 30-year record. Coverage is underwritten by Generali U.S. Branch (NAIC 11231), the US office of Italy’s Assicurazioni Generali, which says the branch is licensed in all states. The BBB rates Generali Global Assistance A+ and has accredited it since 2009.
Legitimate doesn’t mean easy claims. The BBB lists 633 complaints in three years, and on Trustpilot 39% of 890 reviews are one star, mostly about denied or slow claims.
Generali and Redion: what changed in 2026
On June 15, 2026, Generali renamed its global care unit, which included Europ Assistance and Generali Employee Benefits, as Redion. Generali said contracts, service teams and phone numbers stay the same. The US travel site still sells plans as Generali Global Assistance, links to a new Redion travel insurance site, and lists Generali U.S. Branch as the underwriter. If your documents or emails say Redion, it’s the same company.
Generali plans and what they cover
All three plans cover 100% of trip cost for cancellation. Standard is aimed at US trips and covers $50,000 in medical and dental and $250,000 in emergency transportation. Preferred raises those to $150,000 and $500,000 and adds sporting equipment coverage. Premium raises them to $250,000 and $1,000,000, includes rental car damage up to $25,000, and is the only plan with pre-existing condition coverage and the Cancel For Any Reason (CFAR). An optional upgrade that refunds a set percentage of nonrefundable costs if you cancel for any reason. Compare travel insurance upgrade.
Every plan includes 24-hour travel support, telemedicine, concierge and identity theft resolution services. Plans are only sold to US residents, and Generali can’t cover trips to a long list of countries, including Cuba, Russia, Ukraine, Israel and the Middle East.
What customers say about Generali
Recurring themes across the review sites and complaint records listed above, not individual quotes.
Common praise
- Simple online purchase
- Competitive prices
- Fast payment on some approved claims
Common complaints
- Claims denied over strict policy conditions
- Long waits and hard-to-reach representatives
- Claims portal that rejects uploads or asks for more documents
- Slow decisions and delayed reimbursements
Cancel for Any Reason and pre-existing conditions
Generali’s Cancel for Any Reason upgrade reimburses 60% of the penalty amount, which is less than the 75% to 80% some competitors offer. You can only add it to Premium, only within 24 hours of your initial trip deposit, and it isn’t sold to New York residents. You must also insure all prepaid nonrefundable trip costs.
Pre-existing medical conditions are covered on Premium only if you buy before or within 24 hours of your final trip payment, are medically able to travel when you buy, and insure all prepaid trip costs. Allianz and Travel Guard give you 14 to 15 days after your first payment.
Generali complaints and how to avoid claim problems
Most complaints are about claims: denials for reasons travelers didn’t expect, requests for more documents, a portal that rejects uploads, and slow payment. To lower the risk:
- Read the plan documents for your state before the free look ends, especially the list of covered reasons.
- Insure your full prepaid trip cost if you want pre-existing or Cancel for Any Reason coverage.
- Get written proof for everything: doctor’s notes, airline delay letters, receipts.
- File within one year, and as soon as you can.
- If a claim stalls, file a complaint with your state insurance department.
Cancelling a Generali policy
You can cancel online for a full refund during the free look period, which is 10 to 15 days from purchase in most states and 30 days for Indiana residents, as long as you haven’t filed a claim or left on your trip. After that, the premium is generally not refundable, though you can modify the plan, for example to change trip dates.
The rules that protect you
Travel insurance is regulated by each state’s insurance department, which licenses the underwriter and takes complaints about claim handling. You can look up Generali U.S. Branch by its NAIC number, 11231, in your state’s company search or the NAIC’s consumer insurance search. Plan terms vary by state, so the documents for your state control.
