Our verdict

JG Wentworth now sells two very different things. It is a legitimate, long-running company: founded in 1991, BBB accredited since 1996 and rated A+, and it reorganized through a prepackaged Chapter 11 case that ended in January 2018. Its debt relief program charges 18% to 25% of each enrolled debt and requires you to stop paying creditors, and CFPB complaints about it rose from 16 in 2024 to 85 so far in 2026. Its structured settlement buyouts give you cash now at a discount that it does not publish, so get the court-required disclosure, compare an outside quote and consider keeping your payments before you sign.

CFPB complaints
172 from October 2023 to October 2026 (330 since 2013); 140 of the recent ones are about debt settlement6
Company history

JG Wentworth ratings and complaint records

  • BBB A+ Accredited since April 30, 1996; 286 complaints in the last 3 years; 408 customer reviews View source
  • Trustpilot 4.8 out of 5 29,594 reviews; 90% five star, 3% one star; claimed profile on a paid plan that replies to 99% of negative reviews View source
  • CFPB complaints 172 October 2023 to October 2026; top issue: didn't provide services promised (45); 171 closed with an explanation, 1 with monetary relief View source

Pros

  • Long track record since 1991 and an A+ BBB rating with accreditation since 1996
  • Debt relief fee is charged only after a debt is settled, as federal rules require
  • Publishes its fee range (18% to 25%) and says its 46% savings figure is before fees
  • Lets you sell only part of a structured settlement, and offers a written Best Price Guarantee
  • Very large review base: 4.8 on Trustpilot from about 29,600 reviews

Cons

  • CFPB complaints rose from 16 in 2024 to 85 in 2026 through September, mostly about debt settlement
  • Debt settlement means missed payments, credit damage, possible lawsuits and possible taxes on forgiven debt
  • Does not publish the discount it applies when buying structured settlement or annuity payments
  • Debt relief is offered directly in only 30 states and DC; elsewhere you may be passed to a law firm
  • Peachtree Financial Solutions and Stone Street Capital share its headquarters address, so their quotes are not independent

Best for: People with large unsecured debts who are already behind and can keep up a monthly deposit for several years, or payees with an urgent need who have compared quotes and gotten independent advice before selling payments.

Skip it if: You can still pay your bills, qualify for a lower-rate option, or would be selling structured settlement payments for a want rather than a pressing need.

JG Wentworth, step by step

  1. Free call and quote

A specialist reviews your debts or your payment stream. For a structured settlement, you choose to sell all or only some future payments.

  2. Debt relief: enroll and save

You sign the program agreement and make one monthly deposit into a dedicated account. You stop paying enrolled creditors, which the company says is your decision.

  3. Debt relief: settlements and fees

Negotiators settle debts one at a time as money builds up, and the fee for each debt is taken after it settles. JG Wentworth says clients settle six debts on average.

  4. Structured settlement: disclosure and court hearing

You receive a written disclosure of the payments sold, the discount and the net cash. A judge must approve the sale as in your best interest before it is final.

  5. Funding

After the court order, the buyer pays your lump sum and the annuity issuer sends the sold payments to the buyer instead of you.

  6. Leaving the debt program

You can quit debt relief at any time. Federal rules require the dedicated account balance, minus fees already earned, to be returned within seven business days.

JG Wentworth legitimacy and licensing

Yes. The J.G. Wentworth Company was founded in 1991 and is based at 1200 Morris Drive in Chesterbrook, Pennsylvania. The BBB rates it A+ and lists it as accredited since April 30, 1996. Its debt program is run by JGW Debt Settlement, LLC (NMLS 1925575), which says it is licensed or registered where states require it.

Its corporate history has rough patches. The company went public in 2013, and on December 12, 2017 it filed a prepackaged Chapter 11 case in Delaware bankruptcy court. The plan took effect on January 25, 2018: public shares were canceled and the company’s former term lenders received the new equity. The operating subsidiaries did not file, and customer programs kept running.

Legitimate is not the same as low risk. The CFPB’s public database shows 172 complaints naming The J. G. Wentworth Company from October 2023 to October 2026, and the yearly count jumped from 16 in 2024 to 71 in 2025 and 85 in 2026 through late September. Check the BBB and CFPB records again right before you sign.

JG Wentworth debt relief: fees and what you really save

JG Wentworth’s program fee is 18% to 25% of each enrolled debt, depending on your state and how much you owe. It is built into your quoted monthly payment and taken only after a debt settles. The company of the dedicated savings account charges its own fees, listed in your contract, and an optional legal plan from an outside law firm costs a monthly fee the site does not state.

The headline number on the site is 46% average savings, and the fine print says that figure does not include the program fee. If a client settles debts at 46% off and pays a fee of 18% to 25% of the enrolled debt, the net saving is roughly 21% to 28%, before account fees and before any interest and late fees added while you save. On $20,000 of enrolled debt, that means paying about $14,400 to $15,800 in settlements and program fees combined.

The site describes programs as 24 to 48 months in one place and 24 to 60 months, averaging about 42, in its calculator disclosure. It does not publish a minimum debt; its calculator accepts $7,500 to $250,000. Get the fee percentage, the account fees, the expected length and the estimated settlement for each debt in writing.

Selling a structured settlement or annuity to JG Wentworth

This is the business behind the "877 CASH NOW" ads. JG Wentworth buys future structured settlement payments, annuity payments and lottery prizes for a lump sum now, and you can sell all or only some payments. The company says it has paid out $6.5 billion for structured settlements and is the largest US buyer of life-contingent payments.

You always get less than the payments you give up, because the buyer applies a discount. JG Wentworth does not publish its rates. State law makes the discount visible before you commit: Florida, for example, requires a disclosure in 14 point bold type at least 10 days before you sign, listing the payments sold, their present value, every fee, the net cash and the effective annual interest rate you are in effect paying. A judge must then find the sale is in your best interest, considering your dependents, and Florida also requires the court to find the net amount fair, just and reasonable. Under federal tax law (26 U.S.C. 5891), a buyer that skips court approval owes a 40% excise tax on its discount, which is why every structured settlement sale goes to court. Annuities bought outside a lawsuit settlement do not need court approval, so read those contracts even more carefully.

The Best Price Guarantee says JG Wentworth will beat a competitor’s written quote or pay you $1,000, if the quote is signed, dated within three business days and the sale funds at that price within 90 days. Peachtree Financial Solutions and Stone Street Capital list the same Chesterbrook address as JG Wentworth, and the BBB lists Stone Street under the J.G. Wentworth name, so get your comparison quote from an unrelated buyer.

Common complaints

  • Creditor lawsuits that arrive before debts are settled

JG Wentworth complaints and how to avoid problems

Most recent CFPB complaints are about the debt program: 140 of the 172 filed since October 2023 fall under debt or credit management. The top issues were "Didn’t provide services promised" (45), "Charged upfront or unexpected fees" (25), "Problem with customer service" (23), "Confusing or missing disclosures" (20), "Unauthorized withdrawals or charges" (19) and "Confusing or misleading advertising or marketing" (16). All were answered on time; 171 were closed with an explanation and one with monetary relief. The database does not say who was right. Older complaints, mostly from 2015 to 2019, are about mortgages, from the years it ran J.G. Wentworth Home Lending.

Trustpilot reviews, 29,594 of them averaging 4.8, mostly come from people early in the program and praise friendly, clear specialists. The negative ones describe slow contact after enrollment, higher fees than expected and creditor lawsuits before settlements. To protect yourself, keep copies of every contract and disclosure, check your dedicated account statements each month, answer any court papers yourself, and if a problem is not fixed by a manager, file with the CFPB and your state attorney general.

The rules that protect you

Debt relief. The FTC’s Telemarketing Sales Rule bars debt settlement companies selling by phone from charging any fee until they have settled at least one debt, you have agreed to the settlement and a payment has been made to the creditor. Your savings must sit in an account at an insured bank that you own and can withdraw from at any time, with the balance, minus fees earned, returned within seven business days. JG Wentworth’s own disclosure warns that stopping payments will likely hurt your credit, may lead to collections and lawsuits, and can increase what you owe. Forgiven debt can count as taxable income unless an exclusion such as insolvency applies, so ask a tax professional.

Structured settlements. State structured settlement protection acts require the written disclosure, a court hearing and, in some states including Florida, either independent professional advice from a lawyer, CPA or other licensed adviser who is not paid by the buyer, or a written waiver of that advice. Do not waive it.

Who should skip JG Wentworth

Skip debt settlement if you are current on your bills, can get a 0% balance transfer or a lower-rate loan, or need good credit for a mortgage or car loan in the next few years. A nonprofit debt management plan or a direct hardship plan with your card issuer usually does less damage. If your debts are unmanageable, a consultation with a bankruptcy attorney is worth having before any settlement program.

Skip a structured settlement sale if the money is for something that can wait. Those payments were set up to cover long-term needs after an injury, and once sold they are gone. If you do need cash, sell only the payments you must, get at least one quote from an unrelated buyer and have an independent adviser review the disclosure.

Alternatives to JG Wentworth

  • Keep your structured settlement payments

Free: the payments are usually tax free and guaranteed, and selling them trades future income for a smaller lump sum, so look at savings, family help or a loan first.

A nonprofit debt management plan repays the full balance at a lower interest rate without stopping payments, so it does far less damage to your credit than settlement.

  • Call your creditors yourself

Free: many card issuers offer hardship plans or will settle directly, with no 18% to 25% fee on top.

  • DRB Capital

If you decide to sell payments, a quote from a buyer outside the JG Wentworth family gives you a real comparison for the court disclosure.

Frequently asked questions

Is JG Wentworth legitimate and safe to use?

Yes. It has operated since 1991, holds an A+ BBB rating with accreditation since 1996 and is licensed for debt settlement where required. It also has 172 CFPB complaints in the last three years, rising sharply in 2025 and 2026, so read every contract closely.

How much does JG Wentworth charge for debt relief?

18% to 25% of each enrolled debt, depending on your state and debt load, taken only after that debt is settled. The dedicated account provider charges separate fees, and an optional legal plan costs extra each month.

How much will I save with JG Wentworth debt relief?

The company advertises 46% average savings before fees. After its 18% to 25% fee, that works out to roughly 21% to 28% of enrolled debt, and not everyone finishes the program.

What percentage does JG Wentworth take from a structured settlement?

It does not publish its discount rate, and it varies by deal. State law requires a written disclosure before you sign showing the net amount you get and, in states such as Florida, the effective annual interest rate. Compare that number with an outside quote.

Does a judge have to approve selling my structured settlement?

Yes. State structured settlement protection laws require a court order, and federal tax law imposes a 40% excise tax on buyers that skip court approval. The judge must find the sale is in your best interest, taking your dependents into account.

Do I pay taxes when I sell a structured settlement?

JG Wentworth says a court-approved sale keeps the lump sum tax free. Tax treatment depends on your settlement, so confirm with a tax professional before you sign.

Does JG Wentworth debt relief hurt your credit?

Yes. You stop paying enrolled creditors, so accounts go delinquent, and the company's own disclosure says the program will likely hurt your credit and may lead to lawsuits. Interest and late fees keep growing while you save.

Did JG Wentworth go bankrupt?

The parent company filed a prepackaged Chapter 11 case on December 12, 2017 and emerged on January 25, 2018, with its former lenders taking ownership. Its operating subsidiaries did not file and kept serving customers.

Who owns JG Wentworth?

After the 2018 reorganization, the company's former term lenders received its new common equity, and it no longer files public reports with the SEC. Peachtree Financial Solutions and Stone Street Capital list the same Chesterbrook headquarters address.

What states does JG Wentworth debt relief serve?

JGW Debt Settlement offers its program in 30 states and DC, including California, Florida, New York, Pennsylvania and Texas. If you live elsewhere, it may connect you with a law firm, which means a different company and contract.
