Lemonade's homeowners policy suits people with a standard home in one of its 23 states plus D.C. who want to buy and file claims in an app, and it handles escrow and switching for you. It is a legitimate, licensed insurer: Lemonade Insurance Company is owned by publicly traded Lemonade, Inc. (NYSE: LMND), which had 3.3 million customers across its products at mid-2026, and Lemonade says it holds an A (Exceptional) Demotech rating. The tradeoff is service and fit: the BBB rates Lemonade Insurance Company B- with 618 complaints in three years, there are no local agents, and in many states the home policy sold through Lemonade is underwritten by Homesite Group companies, so check which insurer is named on your quote and compare at least two other carriers.

Lemonade, step by step
Get a quote online
Enter your address and home details on the Lemonade site or app. Prices start at $25 a month and depend on your state, home age, materials and rebuild cost.
Check the insurer and coverage
Your quote and policy name the underwriting company, which may be Lemonade or a Homesite Group company. Review dwelling, personal property and liability limits and your deductible, plus any hurricane deductible.
Pay or set up escrow
Pay by credit card or through your mortgage escrow. Lemonade says it notifies your old insurer, works with your lender and helps you get your prorated refund.
File claims in the app
Tap Claim in the app and add your bank details. Lemonade aims to pay simple property claims almost instantly; larger property and liability claims get a full review and take longer.
Cancel anytime
Cancel in the app or online and get a refund for the unused period. If you have a mortgage, have new coverage in place first so your lender doesn't buy force-placed insurance.
Lemonade home insurance legitimacy and licensing
Yes. Lemonade, Inc. is listed on the New York Stock Exchange (LMND) and reported 3,308,666 customers and $1.43 billion in in-force premium across renters, homeowners, car, pet and life insurance as of June 30, 2026. Its property insurer, Lemonade Insurance Company (NAIC 16023), is based at 5 Crosby St. in New York. Lemonade says it holds an A (Exceptional) Financial Stability Rating from Demotech and is reinsured by Swiss Re, Munich Re and Hannover Re, among others.
One detail many reviews miss: Lemonade’s own disclosure says home policies in a long list of states, including California, Texas, New Jersey, Illinois and Georgia, are underwritten by member companies of Homesite Group, with Lemonade acting as the licensed agent. That isn’t a problem by itself, but the insurer on your declarations page is the one that pays claims, so look it up with your state insurance department.
How much Lemonade home insurance costs
Lemonade says homeowners policies start at $25 a month. What you’ll actually pay depends on your state, your home’s age and building materials, what it would cost to rebuild, your deductible and your claims and credit history; Lemonade’s FAQ says people with poor credit or past claims may pay more. Lemonade doesn’t publish average premiums, so get a quote and compare it with at least two other carriers for the same coverage limits and deductible.
You can lower the price by bundling with Lemonade car or pet insurance, paying the full year up front, adding smoke alarms, deadbolts or a burglar alarm, or choosing a higher deductible. In hurricane states, check the separate hurricane deductible listed next to your regular one.
What Lemonade homeowners insurance covers
A standard Lemonade homeowners policy covers the cost to rebuild your home, other structures such as sheds and garages, your belongings (including theft away from home), extra living costs if the home is unlivable, personal liability and medical payments to injured visitors. Personal property is covered at replacement cost, and belongings in a self-storage unit are covered up to 10% of your personal property limit.
Like most home policies, it excludes floods, earthquakes, sinkholes, neglected maintenance, mold, wear and tear and pests. Lemonade sells earthquake policies only in California, and the base policy does cover fire, explosion or theft that results from an earthquake. If you need flood coverage, ask about the National Flood Insurance Program or a private flood policy.
What customers say about Lemonade
Recurring themes across the review sites and complaint records listed above, not individual quotes.
Common praise
- Simple online quote and purchase
- Easy-to-use app
- Fast approval and payment on simple claims
- Quick switching and escrow handling
Common complaints
- Claim denials over exclusions or coverage disputes
- Too little communication while a claim is reviewed
- Hard to reach a person, and repeated document requests
- Automated chat that can't handle complex questions
Claims and complaints
You file claims in the app. Lemonade aims to pay the majority of simple property claims almost instantly, but says larger property and liability claims need a full review and take longer, and so do claims with missing information or a prior loss.
Complaint data is mixed. The BBB rates Lemonade Insurance Company B- and lists 618 complaints over three years. In Indiana’s 2025 homeowners complaint index, Lemonade scored 2.31, based on a single complaint against a small book of $4.9 million in premium, so treat that figure as a weak signal. Trustpilot reviews, which cover all Lemonade products, average 4.2, with praise for fast simple claims and complaints about denials, slow communication on bigger claims and trouble reaching a person.
If a claim is denied, ask for the denial and the policy language in writing, and contact your state insurance department if you can’t resolve it.
How the Lemonade Giveback works
Lemonade says it takes a flat fee from premiums, uses the rest to run the business, pay claims and buy reinsurance, and donates what’s left to causes customers choose. It says it has donated more than $12 million since 2017. Lemonade, Inc. is a public benefit corporation and a certified B Corp. The Giveback doesn’t lower your premium, so compare prices on coverage alone.
Switching, canceling and your rights
Lemonade says it will notify your previous insurer, work with your mortgage lender on escrow and help you get a prorated refund. You can cancel a Lemonade policy anytime in the app or online and get a refund for the remaining period you paid for, and if a home closing falls through it says it will cancel at no charge.
Home insurance is regulated by your state insurance department, which licenses insurers, reviews rates and takes complaints. If you have a mortgage, keep continuous coverage when switching; a lapse can lead your lender to buy much more expensive force-placed insurance and bill you for it.
Who should look elsewhere
Lemonade isn’t an option if your state isn’t on its homeowners list. It’s also a weaker fit if you want a local agent to walk you through a large claim, own a historic or high-value home that needs special coverage, or live in a wildfire, hurricane or flood zone where coverage terms and deductibles matter a lot. An independent agent can compare several carriers for those homes at no cost to you.

- Allstate Agents plus a large national footprint, and a lower Indiana complaint index than Lemonade in 2025. Read review
