NordPass suits people who want a simple, polished app and already use or trust Nord's other products. It is a legitimate password manager from Nord Security, the company behind NordVPN, and it uses zero-knowledge encryption with XChaCha20, so NordPass says it can't read your vault. The free plan keeps unlimited passwords but logs you in on only one device at a time, which pushes most people to Premium. Its last public Cure53 audit we found dates to 2020, and Bitwarden and Proton Pass offer free plans that sync across devices, so compare before paying.

Import from your browser or another password manager with a CSV file, then delete the CSV.

Cancel or export
Turn off auto-renewal in your Nord Account or app store. Within 30 days you can ask for a refund. Export your vault before you leave.
NordPass legitimacy and licensing
Yes. NordPass is made by Nord Security, the Lithuanian company founded in 2012 that also runs NordVPN and NordLocker. NordPass says it uses a zero-knowledge design: your vault is encrypted on your device with XChaCha20 and Poly1305 before it’s sent to NordPass servers, so the company can’t read it.
On outside checks, NordPass says the German firm Cure53 audited NordPass Business in March 2020, found 15 security issues including one rated high, and verified the fixes. NordPass also says its Business product holds ISO/IEC 27001 certification and a SOC 2 Type 2 report. We couldn’t find a newer public audit report, so business buyers should ask for current reports.
NordPass pricing
NordPass has Free, Premium, Family and Business plans. In the US App Store, Premium is listed at $4.99 for one month and $31.99 to $35.99 for 12 months. On the web, NordPass sells 1-year and 2-year terms with lower monthly rates on longer terms, and its pages say plans often go on sale. Its pricing pages blocked our access, so we couldn’t confirm current web or renewal prices.
All paid plans renew automatically. Check the renewal amount at checkout, since sale prices usually apply only to the first term. NordPass offers a 30-day money-back guarantee.
How NordPass Works
Sign Up and Installation
Creating a NordPass account takes under 2 minutes. Sign up with an email address or Google/Apple SSO, then install the browser extension or desktop app. The free plan is immediately available.
Storing and Managing Passwords
NordPass uses XChaCha20-Poly1305 encryption with a zero-knowledge architecture, deriving your vault key locally through Argon2id. Your master password is never stored on NordPass servers. You can import passwords from other managers or browsers in one click. The vault supports folders, notes, and credit card information.
Autofill and Sync
Autofill works across browsers (Chrome, Firefox, Edge, Safari) and mobile apps. Sync is real-time and unlimited on all paid plans. The free plan limits you to one device at a time.

NordPass complaints
Trustpilot reviewers praise support but report frequent logouts and master password prompts, sync problems across devices, autofill misses on some sites, bugs on Linux and Windows, and occasional charges after canceling. To avoid problems:
- Keep the desktop app and extension updated and signed in to the same account.
- Store your recovery code somewhere safe; without it and your master password, NordPass can’t restore your vault.
- Turn off auto-renewal right after buying if you aren’t sure you’ll keep it.
- Ask for a refund within 30 days if it doesn’t work for you.
Canceling and refunds
Subscriptions renew automatically until you cancel. If you bought on the web, turn off auto-renewal in your Nord Account; if you bought in the App Store or Google Play, cancel there. NordPass offers a 30-day money-back guarantee; App Store purchases are refunded through Apple. Before you cancel, export your vault so you can import it into your next password manager.
Who should skip NordPass
If you want a free password manager on more than one device, Bitwarden and Proton Pass both sync across devices on their free plans. If you only use one browser everywhere, its built-in password manager may be enough. NordPass makes sense if you like its apps and plan to pay for Premium or Family.
Alternatives to NordPass
- Your browser's built-in password manager Free and fine if you use one browser on all your devices and don't need sharing or cross-platform apps.
- Bitwarden Better if you want a free plan that syncs across unlimited devices, or Premium for $19.80 a year.
- Proton Pass Better if you want a free tier that syncs across devices and email aliases from a privacy-focused company.
- 1Password Better for families and teams that want a long track record and a 14-day free trial.
