PODS suits people who want to pack and load themselves, need storage between homes, or don't want to drive a rental truck. It is a legitimate moving and storage company that has operated since 1998 and is the best-known name in portable containers. The tradeoff is that you do all the labor, prices are quote-only, and complaints cluster around billing surprises, schedule changes and long phone holds. Get the itemized quote in writing, book contents protection, and cancel or reschedule at least three days before delivery to avoid the $150 fee.

PODS legitimacy and licensing
Yes. PODS, short for Portable On Demand Storage, started the portable container business in 1998 and is run by PODS Enterprises LLC from Clearwater, Florida. It says it has completed more than 2 million long-distance moves and over 7 million initial deliveries, and it operates in the U.S., Canada and the UK.
The federal record is active. FMCSA lists USDOT 1397252 and MC-530785 with authority as a motor carrier, broker and freight forwarder of property, except household goods. Its fleet has 1,324 power units and 1,100 drivers. Over 24 months its trucks were put out of service in 9.5% of vehicle inspections, well below the 22.26% national average, and it was involved in 41 reportable crashes, one fatal.
The BBB rates PODS A+ and it has been accredited since September 2023, but 1,454 complaints were filed in three years. On Trustpilot it scores 4.1 out of 5 from more than 14,000 reviews, with 68% five star and 15% one star. That mix is typical for a company doing millions of moves: most go fine, and the problems that do show up tend to be about money and timing.
PODS pricing explained
PODS doesn’t post prices. Your quote depends on your location, the time of year, how many containers you need and what size, how far you’re moving, and whether the container stays in your driveway or goes to a PODS Storage Center. Prices tend to be higher in dense metro areas and during summer.
The quote has a few moving parts: monthly container rent, a fee for each delivery, pickup or redelivery, transport on long moves, and optional protection. Long-distance transport is billed seven days before transit, and rent renews every 30 days from delivery until the container is picked up for good. Each move includes a month of storage.
To keep the bill close to the quote: ask for the itemized written quote, check whether a non-paved surface fee applies to your driveway, enter promo codes before the first delivery (BUNDLE for storage of three months or more, SERV10 for military), and get a competing quote from 1-800-PACK-RAT or U-Pack for the same dates.
PODS container sizes
PODS lists three sizes. The 8 ft container (8 x 7 x 8 feet, up to 5,200 lbs) fits a studio or up to 500 square feet. The 12 ft (12 x 8 x 8, up to 4,700 lbs) is pitched for small and local apartment moves. The 16 ft (16 x 8 x 8, up to 4,200 lbs) is the most popular and fits about 1,200 square feet. Its long-distance page lists only the 8 and 16 ft, so confirm the 12 ft is available before you plan around it for a long move.
Containers have a steel frame with aluminum panels and a steel roll-up door, and PODS says a loaded container is rated for winds up to 110 mph depending on placement. They are weather-resistant, not waterproof. Bring your own straps for the tie-down points, and keep the heaviest items under 75% of the weight limit.
What customers say about PODS
Recurring themes across the review sites and complaint records listed above, not individual quotes.
Common praise
- Courteous, professional drivers
- Deliveries and pickups that arrive in the window given
- Easy online ordering and clear updates
- Packing on your own timeline with no truck to drive
Common complaints
- Charges or fees customers say were not disclosed, including billing for services that didn't happen
- Long phone holds and trouble reaching a live agent
- Rescheduled or late deliveries on long-distance moves
- Containers placed badly on uneven driveways
- Slow handoffs between support teams when something goes wrong
PODS complaints and how to avoid them
Across the BBB and Trustpilot, the same issues come up. Customers report charges they say weren’t explained, including billing for a service that didn’t happen. Long-distance moves sometimes get rescheduled. Reaching a live agent can mean a long hold, and some say problems bounce between teams. A smaller group reports damage from containers placed on uneven ground, or pests in stored containers.
Most of these can be headed off. Keep the emailed itemized quote and compare every invoice line against it. Check the billing dates in your account so a monthly rent charge doesn’t surprise you. Ask for written confirmation of any fee a representative says will be waived. Photograph your belongings and the container before it’s sealed. If a dispute stalls, file with the BBB, which PODS answers, and dispute card charges for services you didn’t receive with your card issuer.
PODS cancellation and refunds
You can cancel, reschedule or partly cancel for free until 4 p.m. local time at least three days before the first container is delivered. After that, canceling before delivery costs $150. Once a container is delivered, the delivery fee, first month’s rent and any contents protection are nonrefundable.
Cancellations go through Customer Care by chat at MyPODS or by phone at (855) 706-4758. PODS says it does not accept cancellations by email, social media or voicemail, so get a confirmation before you hang up or close the chat.
Damage coverage and the rules that apply
PODS sells two protection options. Contents Protection covers your belongings and the container from $5,000 to $300,000, with a $100 deductible per claim, and pays the depreciated value of damaged items. It excludes damage from poor packing, normal shifting and banned items. Container Only covers the container itself and is meant for people whose homeowners or renters policy covers their belongings. Call your insurer before you choose.
FMCSA lists PODS as authorized to haul property, except household goods, because you pack and load the container yourself. That means the federal rules written for full-service household goods movers, such as binding estimates, are not the framework for most PODS orders. Your rental agreement and PODS coverage terms govern claims, so read them before delivery.
Who should skip PODS
PODS is a poor fit if you can’t do heavy lifting and don’t want to hire loaders separately, if you need everything moved on one fixed day, or if your street or HOA won’t allow a container. In big cities, ask about PODS City Service, which handles parking and stays with your belongings during loading. For a short local move you can finish in a day, a rental truck is often cheaper.
Alternatives to PODS
- 1-800-PACK-RAT Worth a competing quote; it says it will beat a comparable portable container quote in qualifying locations. Read review
- U-Pack Better for a small long-distance move where you pay only for the trailer space you use and want a published transit window. Read review
- A rental truck you drive yourself Usually the cheapest option for a quick local move if you can drive a large truck and finish in a day or two.

Frequently asked questions
Is PODS a legitimate company?
Yes. PODS has operated since 1998, holds active federal operating authority under USDOT 1397252, and has an A+ BBB rating. It also has 1,454 BBB complaints in three years, mostly about billing and scheduling, so keep your written quote.
How much does PODS cost?
PODS doesn't publish prices. Your quote depends on location, season, container size and count, distance and storage time. Ask for the itemized email quote and compare it with at least one other container company for the same dates.
Does PODS require a deposit?
No. You reserve with a credit card and payment for a move is due seven days before the container is delivered.
What sizes do PODS containers come in?
8 ft, 12 ft and 16 ft. The 16 ft fits about 1,200 square feet and is the most popular. The long-distance page lists only the 8 and 16 ft, so confirm the 12 ft for long moves.
How long can I keep a PODS container?
As long as you need. Rent bills every 30 days from delivery until the final pickup, and each move includes one month of storage.
What is the PODS cancellation fee?
Canceling is free until 4 p.m. local time three days before delivery. After that the fee is $150, and after delivery the delivery fee, first month's rent and protection are nonrefundable.
Does PODS insurance cover damage?
PODS sells Contents Protection from $5,000 to $300,000 with a $100 deductible, paying depreciated value. It excludes damage from poor packing and normal shifting, so pack tightly and photograph your items.
Are PODS containers waterproof?
No. PODS says its containers are weather-resistant but not waterproof. Use plastic bins or wrap items that can't get damp, especially for long storage.
Is PODS cheaper than hiring movers?
Often, because you do the labor. Full-service movers include packing and loading, which a container quote does not. Get both kinds of quotes for the same move to see the real gap.
Does PODS move to Canada?
Yes. PODS lists cross-country moves and moves to Canada, and it also operates in the UK.
