Our verdict

Superior Vision is a legitimate vision benefits company owned by Versant Health, which MetLife bought in December 2020, and its individual plans are underwritten by National Guardian Life Insurance Company. The individual Essential, Classic and Premier plans start at $12.50 a month and cover an eye exam after a copay, standard lenses in full, and a $125 to $200 frame allowance. Two warnings: when we checked on October 12, 2026, the individual plan site's enrollment and plan pages returned errors and a banner said it was under construction, and the member app is rated 1.8 out of 5. Call (833) 307-4429 to confirm a plan is sold in your ZIP code, and compare the price with VSP before you buy.

Superior Vision, step by step

  1. Check your ZIP code

Individual plans are not sold everywhere. Call (833) 307-4429, Monday to Friday 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. ET, since the online plan pages were down when we checked.

  2. Pick a plan

Essential, Classic or Premier, which differ mainly in frame and contact lens allowances. Ask for the exam and materials copays and any waiting period in writing.

  3. Find an in-network provider

Use Superior Vision's Find an Eye Care Professional tool, and confirm with the office that it takes your specific plan.

  4. Use your benefits

Pay the copay for your exam, then use the allowance for frames or contacts; you pay any amount over the allowance.

  5. Cancel or renew

Cancellation and refund terms are in your policy; the plan site's terms page was not available, so ask before you enroll.

Superior Vision individual plans

Superior Vision sells three individual and family plans, listed from $12.50 a month:

  • Essential: eye exam covered after a copay, standard lenses covered in full, $125 frame allowance, $120 contact lens allowance.
  • Classic: its most popular plan, with a $150 frame allowance and $150 contact lens allowance.
  • Premier: a $200 frame allowance and $150 contact lens allowance, for people who want pricier frames or lens upgrades.

All three cover standard single vision, lined bifocal and lined trifocal lenses in full and include LASIK discounts through QualSight plus discounts on lens options. The plan site does not list the copay amounts, the premium for each tier or any waiting period, so get those in writing.

Important: on October 12, 2026, the individual plan site (superiorvisionplans.com, also reached from visionplans.com) showed the plan table but its plan finder, support, why-us and terms pages returned errors, along with a note that the site is under construction. Call (833) 307-4429 before you rely on online enrollment.

Superior Vision legitimacy and licensing

Yes. Superior Vision is a brand of Versant Health, which also owns Davis Vision. MetLife completed its $1.8 billion purchase of Versant Health on December 30, 2020, according to MetLife’s annual report. Superior Vision provides group vision benefits through employers and health plans and also sells individual plans that are underwritten by National Guardian Life Insurance Company. National Guardian Life is not the same company as Guardian Life.

We did not find a BBB profile for Superior Vision, and its Trustpilot page has no reviews, so there is little independent customer feedback beyond the 1.8-star member app. Its own site claims 98% member satisfaction and 99% net member retention, figures we could not check. You can confirm a vision plan’s license with your state insurance department.

How Superior Vision coverage works

You see an in-network eye doctor or retailer, pay the exam copay, and the provider bills Superior Vision. For eyewear, standard lenses are covered and you use the frame or contact lens allowance; anything above the allowance is yours to pay. Members can also order eyewear from several in-network online retailers through Superior Vision’s Shop Online page.

One catch for members: Superior Vision says the 1-800-Contacts ExpressExam online vision test is not a covered benefit under any Versant Health plan, so you may owe the full fee if you use it.

Superior Vision complaints and app problems

The clearest public complaint record is the member app: 1.8 out of 5 from 57 App Store ratings. Recent one-star reviews from 2025 and 2026 describe login and server errors, an app that shows only an ID card, coverage summary and provider search, no way to submit claims or store the ID card in Apple Wallet, and provider listings that are not useful. Some reviewers say logging in on the website first helps.

If you have a claim or service problem, ask for a written grievance through Superior Vision’s member services. Group plan members should also loop in their employer’s benefits team. Unresolved problems with an insurance policy can go to your state insurance department.

Superior Vision value for the price

At $12.50 a month, the lowest-priced plan costs $150 a year. That pays off if you use the exam and a full pair of glasses or a year of contacts each year, since the Essential plan covers standard lenses and up to $125 for frames. If you only need an exam, or you buy inexpensive glasses online, paying cash can cost less. Original Medicare does not cover routine eye exams for glasses or contacts, but some Medicare Advantage plans include vision benefits, so check that first if you have Medicare.

Who should look elsewhere

Look at VSP, Guardian’s VSP-based individual plans or EyeMed if you want to see copays, premiums and terms before you enroll, or if your eye doctor is not in Superior Vision’s network. Guardian, for example, publishes a $15 exam copay, a $25 glasses copay and no waiting period on its VSP individual plans. If your employer offers Superior Vision as a group benefit, the group plan’s terms, not the individual plan’s, apply to you.

Alternatives to Superior Vision

  • Guardian individual vision (VSP network) A similar starting price of about $12 a month with published $15 exam and $25 glasses copays and no waiting period. Read review
  • EyeMed A better match if you shop at LensCrafters or Pearle Vision, which are in EyeMed's network. Read review
  • Paying cash for an exam and glasses If you need one exam and one inexpensive pair a year, paying out of pocket can cost less than about $150 a year in premiums.
