Quick verdict

Cox changed in 2026: Charter bought it on August 20, and since September 16 cox.com sells Spectrum plans, with no data caps, no contracts and first-year prices of $30 for 100 Mbps, $50 for 500 Mbps, $60 for 1 Gig and $80 for 2 Gig. Xfinity costs a bit more in year one ($45 for 300 Mbps, $60 for 500 Mbps, $70 for 1 Gig) but lets you lock that price for 5 years, while Cox's promo prices last 1 year before standard rates apply. Both are cable, both throw in a free mobile line for a year, and both score near the bottom of customer satisfaction rankings, so this is a close call that comes down to how long you will stay.

Cox is becoming Spectrum: what changed

Charter Communications, which runs Spectrum, closed its $34.5 billion purchase of Cox on August 20, 2026. On September 16, Spectrum branding, pricing and packages launched across former Cox markets, which include Phoenix, Las Vegas, San Diego, Orange County, Oklahoma City, New Orleans, Norfolk and Providence. When you shop on cox.com today, the plans you see are Spectrum plans.

What that means for you:

  • No data caps. Cox used to charge for going over its monthly data allowance. All plans sold since September 16, 2026 include unlimited data. If you are an older Cox customer, check your plan in your account.
  • New prices. Plans are Internet 100, 500, 1 Gig and 2 Gig at promo prices for the first year, then standard rates.
  • Free mobile line. New internet customers get one Unlimited Mobile line free for up to 12 months through bill credits.
  • Service changes. Charter has committed to move Cox customer service to US based teams within 18 months and to credit customers for outages longer than two hours.

Some longtime Cox customers on Trustpilot report losing legacy discounts in the switch, so check your bill if you are already a customer.

Price: which is cheaper?

In year one, Cox (Spectrum) is usually cheaper. Its listed online prices are $30 a month for 100 Mbps, $50 for 500 Mbps, $60 for 1 Gig and $80 for 2 Gig, each for 1 year. An activation fee is extra, installation costs extra, and the entry plan needs a $10 a month WiFi add-on unless you use your own router.

Xfinity’s national plans, as listed by plan trackers in October 2026, run about $45 for 300 Mbps, $60 for 500 Mbps, $70 for 1 Gig and $100 for 2 Gig, with autopay and paperless billing. The key difference is time: Xfinity lets you lock that price for 5 years, launched in April 2025, and includes the WiFi gateway. Self-install is free and professional installation costs $100.

So over 12 months, Cox at 500 Mbps costs $120 less than Xfinity at 500 Mbps. Over 3 to 5 years the answer depends on Spectrum’s standard rate in your market, which the plan page does not list. Ask for the post-promo price in writing before you order, and check the FCC Broadband Facts label for your address.

Speeds and reliability

Both run hybrid fiber and coaxial cable networks, so their top download speeds are similar: up to 2 Gbps where offered. Upload speeds on cable plans are far lower than download speeds on both networks; if you upload large files or stream live video, fiber is a better fit. Xfinity also sells fiber plans in some areas (Xfinity Fiber scored 77 in ACSI 2026, well above its cable score).

On customer satisfaction, they are close. In the American Customer Satisfaction Index 2026 study, Cox scored 72 and Xfinity’s cable service scored 71, against a non-fiber ISP average of 71. Both have Trustpilot scores of 1.2 out of 5, with more than 90% one-star reviews, and Comcast’s BBB profile logged more than 26,000 complaints across all Xfinity services in three years.

Spectrum cites an Opensignal reliability report from May 2026 for its “most reliable” claim. Because Cox’s network only just joined Spectrum, that claim reflects the legacy Spectrum footprint more than former Cox areas.

Availability: can you even choose?

Cable companies built their networks in separate franchise areas, so many addresses have only one of the two. Cox has historically served parts of Arizona, Nevada, California, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Virginia, Rhode Island and other states, while Xfinity is Comcast’s network in many other metro areas. Before comparing prices, enter your address on both sites and on the FCC National Broadband Map.

If both reach you, also check fiber options. AT&T Fiber, Verizon Fios or a local fiber company usually offers matching upload and download speeds, and fiber providers outscored both cable companies in ACSI 2026. If you are a T-Mobile or Verizon phone customer, 5G home internet is another option worth pricing, since those plans include equipment and lock prices too.

If you are an existing Cox customer, you do not need to switch to get Spectrum pricing; Charter said its pricing and packages are open to existing customers in former Cox markets as well as new ones. Compare your current bill against the listed prices and call to ask for the plan change, and get any promo end date in writing. If you are moving into a former Cox area, remember that new customer offers on cox.com require no Spectrum service at the address in the past 30 days and run through December 31, 2026, subject to change.

Frequently asked questions

Is Cox the same as Spectrum now?

Yes. Charter, which owns Spectrum, completed its purchase of Cox on August 20, 2026, and Spectrum branding, pricing and packages launched in former Cox markets on September 16, 2026. Cox.com now sells Spectrum plans.

Is Cox cheaper than Xfinity?

For the first year, usually yes: $50 for 500 Mbps on Cox versus about $60 on Xfinity. Xfinity can lock its price for 5 years, while Cox prices are promotional for 1 year, so Xfinity may cost less over several years.

Does Cox still have data caps?

Not on plans sold since September 16, 2026, which include unlimited data. Customers who signed up earlier should check their plan details in their account.

Does Xfinity have data caps?

Xfinity's national plans include unlimited data, along with the WiFi gateway and no annual contract.

Which has better customer service, Cox or Xfinity?

Neither scores well. ACSI 2026 rated Cox 72 and Xfinity's cable service 71, and both have Trustpilot scores of 1.2 out of 5.

Can I get both Cox and Xfinity at my address?

Usually not. Cable providers serve separate areas, so check both sites and the FCC National Broadband Map with your address.

Which is better for gaming or working from home?

Both offer up to 2 Gbps downloads on cable with much slower uploads. If fiber reaches your address, it is the better choice for uploads and latency.

Do Cox and Xfinity require contracts?

No. Both sell their main internet plans without annual contracts.
