Agoda Review: Is It the Cheapest Hotel Booking Site?

Agoda legitimacy and licensing

Yes. Agoda launched in Singapore in 2005 and has been owned by Booking Holdings, the company behind Booking.com, Priceline and KAYAK, since 2007. Bookings are handled by Agoda Company Pte. Ltd., registered in Singapore. Agoda says it employs more than 8,000 people in 25 markets and lists hotels and homes in over 200 countries and territories.

Legitimate does not mean trouble free. The BBB rates Agoda’s US profile C- with 923 complaints in three years, Trustpilot reviews are split between five stars and one star, and in July 2026 Korea’s Media and Communications Commission fined Agoda 2.42 billion won (about $1.7 million). The regulator found refund and change conditions hidden behind unrelated links and Pay Later surcharges of up to 5% that were not clear when booking, and ordered Agoda to show final totals and refund rules prominently.

Agoda fees, currency charges and pricing

Agoda’s price includes a “Taxes and Fees” line that, under its terms, can include card processing costs and a fee Agoda keeps. Always compare the final total, not the nightly rate.

Currency choice matters. If you pay in a currency different from the one displayed, Agoda adds an “Additional Amount” of up to 5%. This does not apply if you pay with a US-issued card in US dollars or book from a US, Canada or UK IP address. Your card may also charge a foreign transaction fee, which Agoda does not control. Pay at Hotel bookings avoid the Additional Amount but use the hotel’s or your card’s exchange rate.

Agoda Best Price Guarantee explained

If you find the same stay cheaper after booking, Agoda will either match the rate or credit the difference in AgodaCash, at its discretion. The lower price must be on one of its listed sites, including Booking.com, Expedia, Hotels.com, Priceline, Trip.com and Airbnb. A cheaper rate on the hotel’s own website does not count.

The lower rate must be for the same property, dates, room, occupancy and benefits, with equal or more flexible cancellation terms, in the same currency, including taxes and fees, and still available when Agoda checks. You must submit the claim form, with up to three screenshots, before 11:59 PM local time on the day before check-in. Flights, activities, packages, member-only and secret deals are excluded.

Complaints and what customers report

Agoda’s 54,000-plus Trustpilot reviews split sharply: about half give five stars for low prices and easy booking, while a third give one star. The recurring complaints are refunds denied or delayed, difficulty reaching a human rather than a chatbot, final prices higher than first shown, unclear cancellation terms and trouble changing flights. Agoda replies to 92% of negative reviews.

To avoid the common problems: book a free-cancellation rate if your plans could change, screenshot the price and cancellation terms at checkout, make every change through Agoda rather than the hotel, and pay in the displayed currency. If a refund is refused, escalate in writing through the Help Center and, for a card payment, ask your card issuer about a chargeback.

Cancellation and refund policy

Your confirmation email lists a cancellation due date, which Agoda says is generally 14 days before arrival. Cancel before it and Agoda does not add a processing fee; cancel after it, or fail to show up, and you pay at least one night per room unless your confirmation says otherwise. Non-refundable rates stay non-refundable.

Refunds are requested through the Agoda Help Center and any hotel penalty is deducted. For refundable bookings, Agoda refunds the amount you actually paid, regardless of exchange rate changes, plus any Additional Amount. Changes to dates or length of stay must go through Agoda, not the hotel.

AgodaVIP and AgodaCash

AgodaVIP is a free tiered program with Gold, Platinum and, since October 2025, Diamond levels. Diamond members get up to 25% off exclusive deals, priority support and early coupon access; higher tiers can also unlock free breakfast, upgrades and flexible cancellation at select properties. Agoda does not publish the booking thresholds for each tier.

AgodaCash is Agoda’s account credit, used for price guarantee payouts and promotions. It can only be spent on Agoda, so a cash refund to your card is usually worth more.

Who should book elsewhere

Agoda makes less sense if you collect hotel loyalty points or elite nights, which usually require booking direct, or if you need reliable phone help to change complex itineraries. For US and European trips, compare Booking.com, Expedia and the hotel’s own site, since Agoda’s price edge is strongest in Asia. US customers who want to keep the right to sue in court must opt out of Agoda’s arbitration clause within 30 days.
