Our verdict

The American Express Gold Card is a strong points card for people who spend a lot on dining and groceries: 4x at restaurants worldwide (on up to $50,000 a year) and at U.S. supermarkets (on up to $25,000 a year), with no foreign transaction fee and 20 airline and hotel transfer partners. Its $325 annual fee only makes sense if you will actually use its credits, which add up to $424 a year but arrive in small monthly or twice-yearly pieces tied to Uber, Grubhub and a few chains, Resy restaurants and Dunkin'. American Express is a large, legitimate issuer, though the BBB rates the company F with 4,707 complaints in three years, and the card is a poor fit if you carry a balance.

Amex Gold, step by step

  1. Check approval first

Amex says you can see if you are approved, and your welcome offer, before the credit bureaus are contacted; a hard inquiry happens only if you accept.

  2. Enroll in the credits

Enroll in the dining, Resy and Dunkin' credits in your account and add the card to Uber so the monthly credits start.

  3. Earn on food

Use it at restaurants and U.S. supermarkets for 4x, and book flights and prepaid hotels where they earn 3x and 5x.

  4. Pay in full

The card has no preset spending limit; balances are generally due in full, with an option to pay some purchases over time at interest.

  5. Redeem points

Transfer points to airline and hotel partners or use them on Amex Travel; transfers usually give more value than gift cards or statement credits.

  6. Reassess each year

Add up the credits you actually used. If they plus your extra points do not beat $325, consider a downgrade or a no-fee card.

the Amex Gold Card value for the price

Start with the credits. If you would use all of them, they total $424 a year against the $325 fee, a net $99 before any points. But each credit is small and use-it-or-lose-it: $10 a month at Grubhub and a few chains, $10 a month in Uber Cash, $7 a month at Dunkin’ and $50 twice a year at Resy restaurants. Count only what you already spend at those places.

Then look at points. At 4x, $1,000 a month on dining and groceries earns 48,000 points a year. What that is worth depends on how you redeem: transfers to airline and hotel partners can be worth more than a cent a point, while gift cards and statement credits are usually worth less. If you do not plan to travel with points, a no-fee 3% cash back card is often the better deal.

How Amex Gold rewards work

  • 4x at restaurants worldwide, including takeout and delivery, on up to $50,000 a year, then 1x
  • 4x at U.S. supermarkets on up to $25,000 a year, then 1x
  • 5x on prepaid hotels booked through AmexTravel.com or the Amex Travel app
  • 3x on flights booked directly with airlines or through Amex Travel
  • 2x on prepaid car rentals and cruises through Amex Travel
  • 1x on everything else

Points go into Membership Rewards. You can transfer them to 20 airline and hotel partners, use Pay with Points for flights and prepaid hotels on Amex Travel, or redeem for gift cards and other options. Superstores and warehouse clubs generally do not count as U.S. supermarkets.

Fees, credit limit and the welcome offer

The annual fee is $325 for the main card; the first five additional cards are free and the sixth and beyond cost $35 each. There are no foreign transaction fees. The Gold Card has no preset spending limit, so what you can charge adjusts based on your spending and payments; the balance is generally due in full each month, with an option to carry some purchases with interest. Amex lists the current rates and fees in the application.

Amex does not publish one public welcome offer. You see your personal offer, and the spending required, when you check approval, and you may not be eligible if you have had the card before. Ask for the offer terms in writing before you accept.

American Express legitimacy and complaints

American Express is one of the largest U.S. card issuers, and its complaint counts are large partly because it has so many customers. The CFPB database shows 14,136 credit card complaints against American Express Company from October 2023 to October 2026 across all its cards, led by problems with purchases on statements. The BBB rates the company F with 4,707 complaints in three years, and Trustpilot reviews are mostly one star, citing blocked accounts, credit limit cuts, denied disputes, slow service and rising fees.

In January 2025 Amex agreed to pay more than $138 million to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of New York to resolve an investigation into sales practices, including inaccurate tax advice given to small business customers about two wire products. That case did not involve the Gold Card.

Rules that protect you as a cardholder

Federal law gives you the right to dispute billing errors in writing within 60 days of the statement, limits your liability for unauthorized charges, and requires 45 days’ notice before most rate or fee increases on credit accounts. Statement credits and benefits are not part of those protections, and Amex’s terms say they can change. If Amex does not fix a problem, you can file a complaint with the CFPB, which forwards it to the bank for a response.

Who should look elsewhere

Skip the Gold Card if you do not use Uber, Grubhub, Resy restaurants or Dunkin’, since the fee then depends on points alone. If you want cash back rather than travel points, the Blue Cash Preferred or a no-fee 3% card is simpler. If you shop mainly at warehouse clubs, the 4x grocery rate will not apply. And if you might carry a balance, the interest will cost more than the rewards earn.
