Geico Review: Third-Party Home Insurance Partner Network

GEICO does not write most home policies itself. The GEICO Insurance Agency places you with a partner insurer such as Homesite, Liberty Mutual or Chubb, which sets your price and handles claims.

Our verdict

GEICO home insurance is legitimate, but it is an agency service: the GEICO Insurance Agency shops a list of partner insurers and places your policy with one of them. That suits GEICO auto customers who want one place to quote and bundle. The tradeoff is that your price, coverage, claims service and financial strength all come from the partner insurer, so check which company is named on your quote, look up its ratings and complaint record, and compare quotes from insurers that write their own policies.

GEICO, step by step

  1. Get a quote

Enter your ZIP code online or call. The agency compares its partner insurers for your home and location.

  2. Check the insurer

Your quote names the company that will write the policy. Look up its AM Best rating and your state insurance department's complaint data before you buy.

  3. Inspection

The insurer may inspect the outside of your home, and sometimes the inside, to confirm its condition and replacement cost.

  4. Switch

GEICO says it coordinates with your mortgage company and escrow account and helps cancel your old policy so there is no gap.

  5. File claims with the insurer

Claims go to the partner insurer, not GEICO. Use the insurer's claim line on your policy documents.

GEICO home insurance legitimacy and licensing

Yes. GEICO, owned by Berkshire Hathaway, sells home insurance through the GEICO Insurance Agency, a licensed agency. GEICO’s corporate list of partners says each insurer it places business with “has sole financial responsibility for its own insurance products.” In other words, the company named on your policy, not GEICO, pays your claims.

That is why ratings for “GEICO home insurance” are hard to pin down. GEICO’s A++ AM Best rating applies to its auto insurers. Judge the partner insurer on your quote.

Who underwrites GEICO home insurance?

GEICO’s published list of homeowners partners includes Homesite, Liberty Mutual, Chubb, Lemonade, Hippo and its Spinnaker Insurance Company, Assurant, American Modern, Foremost, Heritage Property and Casualty, Homeowners of America, Homeowners Choice and specialty and surplus lines insurers such as Lloyd’s of London and Scottsdale. It also lists state plans of last resort, including the California FAIR Plan and Citizens Property Insurance in Florida.

If your quote comes from a FAIR Plan or Citizens, that usually means standard insurers would not cover your home, so ask whether you need a separate policy to fill coverage gaps.

GEICO home insurance cost

GEICO does not publish home insurance prices because the partner insurer sets the rate. GEICO lists the main factors: your home’s replacement cost, location risks such as weather and distance to a fire hydrant, the age and condition of the roof and systems, your deductible and safety devices. Bundling with GEICO Auto may lower your total cost, but GEICO does not publish the discount amount. Get at least two other quotes for the same dwelling limit and deductible.

What customers say about GEICO

Recurring themes across the review sites and complaint records listed above, not individual quotes.

Common praise

  • One quote process compares several insurers
  • Easy to manage alongside GEICO auto
  • Help switching with your mortgage escrow

Common complaints

  • Confusion over which company handles claims
  • Service quality varies by partner insurer
  • Premium increases at renewal set by the partner
  • Overall GEICO reviews are poor, mostly about auto

How GEICO home insurance claims work

Home claims go to the partner insurer. GEICO’s Claims Center links to a “File a Claim with an Insurance Partner” page, and your policy documents list the insurer’s claim phone number. Keep a home inventory and photos, since GEICO notes that coverage must be at least 80% of your home’s replacement cost to avoid a reduced payout under the 80% rule.

Complaints and what customers report

BBB and Trustpilot reviews of GEICO are mostly about auto claims and price increases; the BBB lists 2,608 complaints in three years across all GEICO products, and Trustpilot shows 1.3 out of 5. Home-specific complaints often involve confusion about who handles a claim and renewal increases set by the partner insurer. To check the insurer on your quote, use the NAIC Consumer Insurance Search, and contact your state insurance department if a claim is not resolved.

Frequently asked questions

Does GEICO offer home insurance?

Yes, through the GEICO Insurance Agency, which places your policy with a partner insurer. GEICO does not write most home policies itself.

Who is GEICO's homeowners insurance company?

It depends on your quote. Partners include Homesite, Liberty Mutual, Chubb, Lemonade, Hippo, Assurant, American Modern and others, according to GEICO's published list.

Is GEICO home insurance good?

It depends on the partner insurer you are placed with. Check that company's AM Best rating and complaint record, and compare quotes from insurers that write their own policies.

Do I file a home claim with GEICO?

No. You file with the partner insurer named on your policy. GEICO's site links to its insurance partners' claim pages.

How much is GEICO homeowners insurance?

GEICO does not publish prices. Your rate is set by the partner insurer based on your home's replacement cost, location, roof age, deductible and safety features.

Can I bundle GEICO home and auto?

Yes. GEICO says bundling home with GEICO Auto may help you save, though it does not publish the discount amount.

Does GEICO home insurance cover flood?

Standard homeowners policies generally exclude flood. GEICO's agency offers separate flood, earthquake and umbrella coverage.

What is the 80% rule in home insurance?

GEICO explains that you generally must insure your home for at least 80% of its replacement cost, or the insurer may pay only part of a claim.

Why did GEICO place me with a FAIR Plan or Citizens?

GEICO lists state plans such as the California FAIR Plan and Florida Citizens among its partners. These insurers of last resort often cover homes that private insurers decline, sometimes with narrower coverage.

Will a GEICO home quote require an inspection?

Often. GEICO says the insurer may inspect your home's exterior and sometimes the interior, and hazards found can lead to required repairs or cancellation.
