Progressive Review: Cost, Bundling, and Partner Ratings

Progressive sells home insurance as an agency, so your policy may come from Progressive Home or a partner such as Homesite or Openly. Its J.D. Power scores beat the 2026 averages, but complaints run higher than expected.

Our verdict

Progressive home insurance is legitimate and makes the most sense if you already insure your car with Progressive and want one place to manage both. Progressive Advantage Agency places you with Progressive Home or a partner insurer, and the insurer on your policy handles claims, so the quality you get depends on that company. Progressive Home scored above average in J.D. Power's 2026 home and property claims studies, but NerdWallet's read of NAIC data shows more complaints than expected, and Progressive cut about 100,000 Florida policies in 2024. Get at least one quote from a company that writes its own policies to compare.

Progressive does not publish a national average homeowners premium. Your rate depends on the insurer you are placed with, your home's location, age, roof and rebuild cost, and your claims and credit history where allowed.

Progressive, step by step

  1. Get a quote

Quote online or by phone at 1-855-347-3939. You enter the address, home details and safety features once.

  2. See which insurer is offered

Progressive Advantage Agency quotes you with Progressive Home or a partner insurer. Note the insurer's name and check its rating and complaint record.

  3. Choose coverage and add-ons

Set dwelling, belongings, liability and deductible. Add-ons can include extended replacement cost, water backup, service line and equipment breakdown, depending on the insurer and state.

  4. Inspection and underwriting

Some insurers order an inspection after the policy starts and can require repairs or cancel if they find problems such as roof wear. Ask your insurer what applies.

  5. Claims

Report a claim through Progressive's claims page or directly with your insurer. The insurer named on your policy handles the claim.

Progressive home insurance legitimacy and licensing

Yes. Progressive is a publicly traded insurer founded in 1937, and its insurance subsidiaries hold an A+ (Superior) rating from AM Best, affirmed in May 2026. For home insurance, though, Progressive mostly acts as an agency. Progressive Advantage Agency places your policy with a Progressive-affiliated insurer (Progressive Home) or with an unaffiliated one, and Progressive’s own disclosure says each insurer is solely responsible for its claims and pays the agency a commission.

So the right question is who your insurer is. NerdWallet counts nearly a dozen partners, including Nationwide, Homesite and Openly. Before you buy, look up the insurer named on your quote in the NAIC Consumer Insurance Search to check its license and complaints.

Progressive home insurance cost

Progressive does not publish a national average homeowners premium. NerdWallet’s February 2026 sample put Progressive at $2,580 a year, or about $215 a month, for $400,000 of dwelling coverage, $300,000 of liability and a $1,000 deductible, compared with about $2,490 nationally for the same dwelling limit.

The main savings come from bundling. Progressive says adding home cuts auto premiums by 7% on average in most states, and customers who saved on a home and auto bundle reported $1,099 a year in savings in its June 2025 to May 2026 survey. Other discounts include quoting at least 10 days before your start date, alarms and safety devices, and buying a new home. Those survey figures only count people who saved, so compare quotes yourself.

How Progressive home insurance works

You start a quote on progressive.com or by phone. Progressive Advantage Agency shows a quote from Progressive Home or a partner insurer, and the policy, billing and claims are run by that insurer. Standard coverage includes the dwelling, personal property, loss of use and personal liability. Depending on the insurer and state, you can add extended replacement cost, replacement cost for belongings, water backup, extra valuables, service line, equipment breakdown and identity theft coverage.

NerdWallet notes that you may be able to use a single deductible when one disaster damages both your home and a car insured with Progressive, but that depends on the insurer, so ask before relying on it.

Progressive in Florida and high-risk states

Progressive has been shrinking its storm-exposed property business. Insurance Business reported in March 2024 that Progressive sent non-renewal notices in Florida starting in May 2024, mostly for DP3 policies on rental and second homes plus properties it rated high risk, with the Insurance Information Institute estimating about 100,000 policies. Triple-I also reported about 56,000 Florida non-renewals in 2022.

If you live in Florida or another coastal state, ask whether your quote is with Progressive Home or a partner, and keep your renewal notices. A non-renewal usually comes with advance notice set by state law, so you have time to shop.

What customers say about Progressive

Recurring themes across the review sites and complaint records listed above, not individual quotes.

Common praise

  • Easy online quote and one account for home and auto
  • Bundle discounts for existing Progressive auto customers
  • Smooth claims when the policy is with Progressive Home

Common complaints

  • Large renewal premium increases
  • Non-renewals, especially in Florida and other storm states
  • Confusion over which insurer actually handles the claim
  • Slow or disputed roof and water damage claims

Progressive home insurance complaints

Ratings point in two directions. Progressive Home scored 659 in J.D. Power’s 2026 Home Insurance Study (6th of 26, above the 644 average) and 704 in the 2026 Property Claims Satisfaction Study (7th of 15, just above the 702 average). But NerdWallet’s read of 2022 to 2024 NAIC data shows more homeowners complaints than expected for Progressive’s size, and the company-wide BBB profile is rated B- with 5,262 complaints in three years.

Recurring complaints are steep renewal increases, non-renewals, slow roof and water claims, and confusion about which company is handling the claim. Keep photos of your home before a loss, get claim decisions in writing, and file unresolved complaints with your state insurance department.

Cancelling Progressive home insurance

Cancel by contacting Progressive or the insurer named on your policy. If you paid the term upfront, you are usually owed the unused premium, though some insurers charge a fee or keep a short-rate share, so ask first. If your mortgage lender pays the premium from escrow, line up the new policy and send the lender proof before the old one ends, or the lender can buy costly force-placed coverage for you.

Who should look elsewhere

If you don’t have Progressive auto, the bundle discount is gone and you are mostly paying for Progressive to act as a broker. Homeowners who want one company to handle the sale and every claim, people in Alaska or Hawaii, and those with older roofs in storm states may do better with a direct insurer or an independent agent who can shop several carriers.
