Bumble vs. Tinder dating apps
Tinder has the bigger pool and the cheaper first upgrade, so it wins for most people. Bumble dropped its women-first rule in 2026 but still offers filters, Boost and a separate BFF app.

Tinder is the better starting point for most people because it has far more users in most areas and its free version and $9.99 Plus tier cover the basics. Bumble's main difference for 12 years was that women sent the first message in opposite-sex matches, and in August 2026 it dropped that rule in most markets, so the two apps now work much alike. Bumble is still worth adding if Tinder feels crowded with casual or fake profiles where you live, or if you want its low-cost Boost tier. Both are free to start, so running both costs nothing.

Bumble's first-move rule is gone in most markets
Bumble launched in 2014 with one rule that set it apart from Tinder: in opposite-sex matches, the woman had to send the first message within 24 hours or the match expired. In 2024 it added Opening Moves, which let women set a question for matches to answer.
In August 2026 Bumble announced it was opening the first message to everyone. The company cited a survey in which 66% of women said they preferred men to send the first message. Bumble’s help center now describes a system where both people in a match get one opening message, and a separate help page says the women-first rule continues only in Australia and Mexico. Bumble’s App Store description still mentions the 24-hour women-first window, so the app you download may not match every listing yet.
On Tinder either person can message after a match, as it always has. With the rule gone, the two apps now share the same basic flow: swipe, match, message. The differences that remain are pool size, price, verification and who owns the app.
Price: Bumble Premium vs Tinder Gold
Both apps let you swipe, match and message free. Neither publishes a fixed price list, and both change prices by plan length.
Tinder sells Plus (unlimited likes and rewinds, no ads, Passport, Incognito), Gold (adds See Who Likes You, weekly Super Likes and a monthly Boost) and Platinum (adds Prioritized Likes). Its terms say prices vary by region, subscription length, past purchases and account activity. In October 2026 the App Store showed Plus at $9.99 and Gold at $13.99 to $24.99. A California class action over higher prices for users 29 and over settled for $60.5 million in 2026.
Bumble sells Boost, Premium and Premium+. The App Store showed Bumble Boost from $2.99 to $12.99 and Bumble Premium from $17.99 to $32.99, and Bumble says its paid plans add advanced filters, extended matches, Incognito Mode and Travel Mode. Premium+ prices were not listed.
Bumble Boost is the cheapest paid option on either app, and Tinder Plus is the cheapest full subscription. At the top tiers, prices land in a similar range. Check the renewal price before you confirm, since Tinder’s terms say discounted plans renew at full price.
Which app has more people?
Tinder, by a wide margin. Match Group reported 8.5 million paying Tinder users worldwide in the second quarter of 2026, down 5% from a year earlier. Bumble Inc. reported 2.08 million paying users on the Bumble app in the same quarter, down from 2.50 million, and Bumble app revenue fell 14.7% to $171.7 million. Google Play shows the same gap: about 9.24 million reviews for Tinder against 1.63 million for Bumble.
Paying users are not the same as active users, and neither company publishes U.S. monthly user counts that can be compared directly. But both numbers point the same way, and size matters most in suburbs and small towns, where a smaller app can run out of new profiles in a few days.
Bumble is in a rebuild. Founder Whitney Wolfe Herd returned as CEO in 2025, and the company is migrating its platform, reworking matching and relaunched its BFF friend-finding app in the U.S. in September 2025. That could change the app over the next year. For now, if you can only use one swipe app, Tinder puts more people in front of you.
Safety and verification
Neither app runs criminal background checks, and both rely on verification badges plus user reports.
Tinder requires Face Check, a short video selfie, for new users in California since June 2025, with more U.S. states being added. Tinder keeps an encrypted face map to block duplicate accounts and says exposure to likely bad actors dropped where it launched. Fake profiles and scam accounts are still its most common complaint, and a ban can extend to other Match Group apps.
Bumble offers photo verification for a blue check, optional ID verification, Share Date to send your date’s details to a friend, and tools to block, report and unmatch. Trustpilot reviewers complain about unexpected renewals, bans without explanation and an AI help center with no clear way to reach a person.
Both apps sit near 1 out of 5 on Trustpilot, where reviewers skew toward people with a problem, and near 4 on Google Play. On either one, prefer verified profiles, video chat before meeting, meet in a public place, and never send money or gift cards to a match. The FTC says requests for money are the clearest sign of a romance scam.
Canceling a subscription
Both apps renew automatically, and deleting the app or your profile does not cancel billing.
Cancel in the same place you paid. For iPhone purchases, use Apple subscription settings. For Google Play purchases, cancel in Google Play. If you paid on the web, use the app’s account settings. Apple and Google handle refunds for purchases made through their stores.
Tinder says purchases are generally non-refundable, with a right to cancel for a refund before midnight of the third business day after subscribing in 12 states, including California, New York, Illinois and Ohio. Bumble’s terms, last updated June 17, 2026, follow the same pattern: purchases are generally nonrefundable, but residents of the same 12 states can cancel for a refund before midnight of the third business day after subscribing. Bumble draws more billing complaints, with an F rating and 675 complaints in three years on the BBB, so keep your receipt and screenshot any cancellation.
If you are trying both apps, stay on the free tiers for a week or two first. The app that gets you more replies is the one worth paying for, and you avoid two renewals at once.

Frequently asked questions
Is Bumble better than Tinder?
For most people Tinder is the better first choice because it has far more users. Bumble is worth adding if you want a second swipe app outside Match Group or cheap Boost add-ons.
Do women still message first on Bumble?
Not in most markets. Bumble announced in August 2026 that anyone can send the first message, and its help center says the women-first rule now applies only in Australia and Mexico.
Is Bumble more serious than Tinder?
Bumble has long marketed itself as more respectful and relationship-minded, but neither company publishes data on what users want or how many find partners. Your bio and filters matter more than the app.
Which is cheaper, Bumble or Tinder?
Bumble Boost, from $2.99 on the App Store, is the cheapest paid option. Tinder Plus at $9.99 is cheaper than Bumble Premium, which the App Store lists from $17.99.
Are Bumble and Tinder owned by the same company?
No. Tinder is owned by Match Group, which also owns Hinge and Match. Bumble is owned by Bumble Inc., founded by Whitney Wolfe Herd, a Tinder co-founder.
Which app has more users?
Tinder. It had 8.5 million paying users in Q2 2026 against 2.08 million on the Bumble app, and both companies reported fewer payers than a year earlier.
Do Bumble and Tinder verify profiles?
Both do. Tinder requires a Face Check video selfie for new users in California and more U.S. states. Bumble offers photo verification and optional ID verification.
Can I use Bumble to make friends?
Yes, through BFF, Bumble's friend-finding app, which was relaunched in the U.S. in September 2025. Tinder does not offer a friends mode.
