It is a legitimate dating app run by Bumble Inc., a Nasdaq-listed company based in Austin, Texas. Create a profile
Download the app, add photos and profile details, and set your preferences. You must be at least 18 or the age of majority where you live.
Verify your photos
Take a photo verification selfie for a blue check, and add optional ID verification.
Swipe and match
Swipe right to like and left to pass. A mutual right swipe creates a match.
Start the chat
In most markets either person can now send the first message. In Australia and Mexico women still message first in opposite-sex matches.
Upgrade or cancel where you paid
Paid plans renew automatically. Cancel in Apple or Google subscription settings, or in the app if you paid Bumble directly. Deleting the app does not cancel billing.
Bumble legitimacy and licensing
Yes. Bumble is run by Bumble Inc., a public company listed on Nasdaq under BMBL and based in Austin, Texas. Founder Whitney Wolfe Herd, a Tinder co-founder, launched the app in 2014, took the company public in 2021 and returned as CEO in 2025. The App Store listing is sold by Bumble Holding Limited, and the same company runs Badoo and the BFF friend-finding app.
Legit does not mean problem free. The BBB rates Bumble F with 675 complaints in the last three years, and Trustpilot shows 1.2 out of 5. Most complaints are about billing, refunds and account bans rather than the app being a scam. The bigger risk is other users: like every dating app, Bumble has fake and scam profiles, and it does not run criminal background checks.
The company is also in a rebuild. In the second quarter of 2026 total revenue fell 15.2% to $210.5 million, Bumble app paying users fell to 2.08 million from 2.50 million, and the company reported a net loss of $127.9 million that included a $169.3 million impairment charge. It says it is completing a platform migration and reworking its matching.
Bumble's women-first rule ended in August 2026
For 12 years Bumble’s core rule was that in opposite-sex matches the woman sent the first message within 24 hours, or the match expired. In 2024 it added Opening Moves, which let you set a question for matches to answer.
In August 2026 Bumble announced it was opening the first message to everyone. The company cited a survey in which 66% of women said they preferred men to send the first message. Its help center now describes a system where both people in a match can send an opening message, and a separate help page says the women-first rule continues only in Australia and Mexico.
Some text has not caught up. The App Store description and older reviews, including earlier versions of this page, still describe the 24-hour women-first window. Check what your app shows when you match.
Bumble cost
Bumble is free to use for swiping, matching and messaging. Paid options come in three levels, Boost. A paid feature that shows your profile to more people for a short time. Compare dating apps, Premium and Premium+, plus BumbleCoins for single features. Bumble says the paid plans add advanced filters, extended matches, Incognito Mode and Travel Mode.
Bumble does not post a price list outside the app. In October 2026 the US App Store showed Bumble Boost at $2.99 to $12.99 and Bumble Premium at $17.99, $19.99 and $32.99, depending on plan length. Premium+ prices were not shown. Bumble’s terms say subscriptions renew at Bumble’s then-current price unless you cancel, and that it will give notice of price changes on plans you hold.
Compared with rivals, Boost is the cheapest paid entry on the three biggest apps, while full Premium costs more than Tinder Plus ($9.99) and about the same as Hinge’s subscriptions ($14.99 to $34.99). Use the free version for a week or two before paying.

Bumble complaints and what customers report
Across the BBB and Trustpilot, the same problems come up again and again:
- Renewals and refunds. People report being charged after they thought they had canceled, often because they deleted the app or account instead of canceling the subscription in Apple, Google or the app.
- Bans without a reason. Users report being blocked with no explanation and slow or automated appeals.
- Support access. Reviewers say the help center answers with automated replies and it is hard to reach a person.
- Match quality. Fake profiles, inactive accounts and the same faces repeating in smaller areas.
To avoid the most common problem, cancel at least a day before renewal in the place you paid, screenshot the confirmation, and set a reminder. If a charge is disputed and Bumble does not help, you can file with the BBB or, for card charges, ask your card issuer about a dispute.
Bumble safety and legitimacy
Bumble offers photo verification for a blue check, optional ID verification, Share Date to send your date’s details to a friend, and tools to block, report and unmatch. It does not run criminal background checks, so verification only tells you the photos match the person on camera.
Romance scams are the main risk on any dating app. The FTC says a request for money, gift cards or crypto from someone you met online is the clearest sign of a scam. Video chat before meeting, meet in a public place, tell a friend where you will be, and report anyone who asks for money or pushes you to move to another app.
How to cancel Bumble and get a refund
Cancel where you paid. iPhone purchases are canceled in Apple subscription settings, Android purchases in Google Play, and purchases made directly with Bumble in the app’s settings. Bumble’s terms say deleting the app does not cancel your subscription, and deleting your account ends your benefits immediately with no refund.
Bumble’s terms say charges are generally nonrefundable with no credit for partial periods. Residents of Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Rhode Island and Wisconsin can cancel without penalty before midnight of the third business day after subscribing. Apple handles refunds for purchases made with an Apple ID; for Google Play or direct purchases, contact Bumble support.
Bumble’s terms also include an arbitration agreement and class action waiver, so most disputes go to individual arbitration rather than court.
