Hinge vs. Bumble dating apps

Hinge is the better pick for most people who want a relationship. Bumble is cheaper to try with paid perks, but it is shrinking and has just dropped its women-first messaging rule.

Quick verdict

Hinge is the better choice for most people looking for a relationship. Its prompt-based profiles give you something specific to reply to, the free version lets you match and message, and it is growing while Bumble is losing paying users. Bumble's signature rule, women send the first message, was dropped in August 2026 in most markets, so the main reason to pick it over Hinge is weaker than it was. Bumble still makes sense if your local Hinge pool is thin or you want cheaper add-ons like Boost.

How Hinge and Bumble work

Hinge has no swiping. You build a profile with photos and written, voice or video prompt answers, then like or comment on one specific photo or answer on someone else’s profile. That comment becomes the first line of the conversation, which is why people who want a relationship tend to prefer it. Hinge also has Your Turn Limits, which pauses new likes when too many matches are waiting on your reply, and in some regions new members start on a waitlist.

Bumble is a swipe app. You swipe right to like and left to pass, and a mutual right swipe creates a match. For 12 years the rule was that in opposite-sex matches the woman had to send the first message within 24 hours. In August 2026 Bumble announced it was opening the first message to everyone. Its help center now describes a system where both people get one opening message and the old women-first rule applies only in Australia and Mexico. Bumble’s App Store description still mentions the 24-hour women-first limit, so check what your app shows.

The practical difference: Hinge pushes you to react to something specific, while Bumble is faster to browse and relies more on photos.

Price: Hinge+ and HingeX vs Bumble Premium

Both apps let you match and message for free. Hinge’s free tier caps your daily likes and gives you 1 Rose and 1 Undo Skip a week.

Hinge sells two subscriptions. Hinge+ adds unlimited likes, the ability to see everyone who liked you and advanced filters. HingeX adds Priority Likes and an always-on boost. Hinge does not publish a price list; the US App Store shows Hinge+ at $16.99 or $19.99 and other Hinge subscriptions at $14.99, $29.99 and $34.99. Roses cost $9.99 for 3.

Bumble has three paid levels: Boost, Premium and Premium+. The App Store lists Bumble Boost from $2.99 to $12.99 and Bumble Premium from $17.99 to $32.99, and Bumble says the paid plans add advanced filters, extended matches, Incognito Mode and Travel Mode. Premium+ prices were not shown.

Bumble has the cheaper entry point because of Boost. At the full subscription level the two cost about the same. Neither app shows a fixed price outside the app, and prices change with plan length, so compare the renewal price before you confirm.

Which app is better for a relationship?

Neither company publishes data on how many users find long-term partners, so any claim that one app produces more relationships is marketing. What can be compared is design and direction.

Hinge is built around effort. A full profile with prompt answers takes longer to set up, and a like has to land on something specific. That filters out some people who only want to browse photos. Match Group reported that Hinge grew revenue 22% and monthly active users 13% year over year in the second quarter of 2026, and expects Hinge to reach $1 billion in revenue in 2027.

Bumble is in the middle of a rebuild. Founder Whitney Wolfe Herd returned as CEO in 2025, and the company is migrating its platform and reworking matching. In the second quarter of 2026 Bumble app revenue fell 14.7% to $171.7 million and Bumble app paying users fell to 2.08 million from 2.50 million a year earlier. A smaller paying base does not mean the app is empty, but it is moving in the opposite direction from Hinge.

If you want a relationship, start with Hinge. If Hinge runs out of new profiles near you, add Bumble rather than switching.

Safety, verification and complaints

Both apps offer photo or selfie verification, block and report tools, and neither runs criminal background checks.

Hinge gives a Selfie Verified badge and, in some regions, requires Face Check, a video selfie used to estimate age and catch duplicate or fake accounts. Its biggest complaint is account bans with no stated reason. The BBB lists 17,502 complaints against Hinge, Inc. in three years, and a December 2025 lawsuit alleges reported abusers were able to stay on or rejoin Hinge and Tinder.

Bumble offers photo verification, optional ID verification, Share Date to send date details to a friend, and tools to block and report. Trustpilot reviewers cite unexpected renewals, an AI help center with no way to reach a person, and bans without explanation. The BBB rates Bumble F, with 675 complaints in three years.

Both score 1.2 out of 5 on Trustpilot, where reviewers skew toward people with a problem. App store ratings are higher: Hinge 4.4 and Bumble 4.3 on the App Store, and Bumble 3.8 vs Hinge 3.5 on Google Play. Whichever you pick, video chat before meeting, meet in public, and never send money to a match.

Canceling and refunds

Both apps renew subscriptions automatically, and deleting the app does not stop billing on either one.

On Hinge, cancel where you paid: Apple subscription settings, Google Play, or Hinge’s account settings if you paid by card through Hinge. Roses and Boosts are nonrefundable. Apple and Google handle refunds for store purchases, Hinge reviews requests for subscriptions bought directly in the last 14 days, and residents of 12 states can cancel for a full refund within 3 business days.

On Bumble, purchases made through Apple or Google are canceled and refunded through those stores. Bumble’s terms, last updated June 17, 2026, say purchases are generally nonrefundable, but residents of 12 states, including California, New York and Illinois, can cancel for a refund before midnight of the third business day after subscribing. For direct purchases, contact Bumble support.

A simple rule for both: set a calendar reminder a few days before renewal, and screenshot the price you agreed to. If a renewal surprises you, request a refund from Apple or Google first, since they process most of these charges.

Frequently asked questions

Is Hinge or Bumble better for serious relationships?

Hinge is the better fit for most people who want a relationship, because its prompt-based profiles and comment likes lead to more specific conversations. Neither app publishes data on how many users find partners.

Do women still have to message first on Bumble?

Not in most markets. Bumble announced in August 2026 that it is opening the first message to everyone, and its help center says the women-first rule now applies only in Australia and Mexico. Some app text still mentions the old rule.

Is Hinge cheaper than Bumble?

Full subscriptions cost about the same: the App Store shows Hinge subscriptions from $14.99 to $34.99 and Bumble Premium from $17.99 to $32.99. Bumble Boost, from $2.99, is the cheapest paid option on either app.

Can you use Hinge and Bumble for free?

Yes. Both let you create a profile, match and message for free. Paid plans add unlimited likes, filters, seeing who liked you and more visibility.

Which app has more users, Hinge or Bumble?

Neither publishes US user counts that can be compared directly. Bumble has more app store ratings, but Hinge is growing (users up 13% in Q2 2026) while Bumble's paying users are falling.

Who owns Hinge and Bumble?

Hinge is owned by Match Group, which also owns Tinder, Match, OkCupid and Plenty of Fish. Bumble is owned by Bumble Inc., which also runs Badoo and the BFF friend-finding app.

Are Hinge and Bumble safe?

Both offer verification badges and reporting tools, and neither runs background checks. Use verified profiles, video chat first, meet in public, and never send money to someone you met on the app.

Should I use Hinge and Bumble at the same time?

Many people do. Running both widens your pool, especially outside big cities. Stay on free versions until you know which app gets you more replies.
