Quick verdict
GEICO wins by default for new shoppers, because Esurance no longer sells new policies. Allstate folded Esurance into its own brand starting in 2020, and state filings ended new Esurance business in December 2022. GEICO is the closest match to how Esurance worked: online and app first, with few local agents, and it averages $2,020 a year for full coverage in NerdWallet's October 2026 data with fewer complaints than expected for its size. If you still have an Esurance policy, you can keep it until renewal, then compare the Allstate or National General offer against a GEICO quote.

What happened to Esurance
Status note: Esurance has changed status. Allstate no longer sells new Esurance policies; our Esurance review explains what that means if you already hold one.
Esurance stopped taking new customers. Allstate’s 2019 annual report said running both the Allstate and Esurance brands for direct sales no longer made sense and that Esurance’s marketing budget would shift to Allstate. Esurance’s results were merged into Allstate’s in 2020, and state filings effective December 20, 2022 ended new Esurance business, with existing customers to be offered an Allstate or National General policy.
The two underwriting companies, Esurance Insurance Company and Esurance Property and Casualty Insurance Company, remain Allstate subsidiaries, so older policies can stay in force. Allstate’s current sales brands are Allstate, National General and Direct Auto; Esurance is not one of them.
A quote request on esurance.com now sends you to Allstate brands, which turns “Esurance vs. GEICO” into two questions: what to buy instead, and what to do with a policy you already hold.
If you still have an Esurance policy
Your Esurance policy continues until it expires or is replaced. The esurance.com login and Esurance Mobile app still work for payments and claims, and customer service answers at 1-800-378-7262. When renewal comes, expect to be offered an Allstate or National General policy instead.
Treat that renewal like a brand-new quote: limits, deductibles, discounts and price can all shift when you move to a sister company’s policy. Compare the new declarations page with your current one line by line, and get a GEICO quote at the same time.
Esurance’s own complaint record is small: an A+ BBB rating (not accredited) with 192 complaints in three years, 23 of them in the last 12 months. Allstate’s filings also list Katz v. Esurance Property and Casualty Insurance Company, a putative class action over total loss payouts filed in February 2024; no class has been certified.
What GEICO costs compared with Esurance's successor
Because Esurance renewals usually move to an Allstate brand, the useful price comparison is GEICO against Allstate. In NerdWallet’s October 2026 data, GEICO is cheaper in every profile:
| Driver profile | GEICO | Allstate |
|---|---|---|
| Good driver, full coverage | $2,020 | $3,210 |
| Minimum coverage | $492 | $804 |
| After an at-fault accident | $3,510 | $5,018 |
| After a DUI | $4,760 | $4,631 |
| Poor credit, full coverage | $2,910 | $4,824 |
All figures are NerdWallet averages for a 35-year-old with a 2023 Toyota Camry, 100/300/50 liability limits and $1,000 deductibles. A single driver in a single ZIP code can pay far more or less, so read the table as a pattern, not a price.
GEICO also beats the national average of $2,361 for full coverage, while Allstate sits well above it. If a renewal offer from Allstate or National General lands near these averages, a GEICO quote is likely to save you money, though your own price depends on your state, car and record.
Switching from Esurance to GEICO
GEICO sells mostly online and by phone, so the switch feels much like Esurance did. Get a GEICO quote using the same liability limits, deductibles and add-ons as your current policy, and do it before your Esurance renewal date so there is no gap in coverage.
GEICO DriveEasy scores braking, cornering and phone use through an app, and GEICO says premiums vary with participation and the driving the app logs. It is offered in 47 states and D.C., but not in California, Hawaii or Vermont. GEICO says drivers can earn Accident Forgiveness at no charge after five years of continuous GEICO coverage, which keeps the premium from rising after the first qualifying accident.
Two caveats. GEICO does not sell gap insurance, according to NerdWallet, so if you have a loan or lease, arrange gap coverage elsewhere. And GEICO placed 14th of 20 in J.D. Power’s 2025 auto claims study, so its service record is middling even though its complaint ratio to regulators is low. Cancel the Esurance policy only after the GEICO policy is active, and ask Esurance about any refund of unused premium.
