Quick verdict

GEICO is the better choice for most drivers. NerdWallet's averages put it at $2,020 a year for full coverage against $4,042 at Farmers, and the gap grows after an accident, after a DUI and with poor credit, where Farmers charges about $7,750 and GEICO about $2,910. GEICO also has fewer complaints than expected for its size and AM Best's top A++ rating. Farmers ranked a little higher in J.D. Power's 2025 shopping study and sells through local agents, so it can make sense for a household bundling home and auto with an agent.

Price: which is cheaper?

GEICO is cheaper than Farmers in every profile NerdWallet priced, often by thousands of dollars. A good driver pays about $2,020 less a year with GEICO for full coverage. After an at-fault accident the gap is about $2,540, after a DUI about $2,780, and with poor credit about $4,840.

Driver profile GEICO Farmers
Good driver, full coverage $2,020 $4,042
Minimum coverage $492 $1,260
After an at-fault accident $3,510 $6,051
After a DUI $4,760 $7,540
Poor credit, full coverage $2,910 $7,750

These are NerdWallet’s average annual rates for a 35-year-old driver with a 2023 Toyota Camry, 100/300/50 liability limits and $1,000 deductibles. The national average is $2,361 a year for full coverage and $648 for minimum coverage. Rates for one person in one ZIP code can land far from these averages, so treat them as a guide to who tends to be cheaper, not a quote.

Farmers’ incident rates come from NerdWallet’s Farmers review, last updated in December 2025. Farmers says switchers save an average of $530, but that is its own marketing figure.

Claims and customer service

J.D. Power’s 2026 U.S. Auto Insurance Study, released June 9, 2026, put overall industry satisfaction at 644 out of 1,000, unchanged from a year earlier, but company scores are not public. In the 2025 studies (placements as reported by NerdWallet), GEICO placed 12th of 18 for the shopping experience and 14th of 20 for claims, while Farmers placed 11th of 18 and 17th of 20.

Complaints to state regulators tell a similar story from a different angle. NerdWallet’s read of NAIC data shows GEICO with fewer than expected complaints for its size and Farmers with close to expected. On the BBB, GEICO is rated A+, not accredited; 2,608 complaints in 3 years, and Farmers is rated A-, not accredited; 1,562 complaints in 3 years. BBB complaint counts track company size, so compare them with how many policies each insurer writes, not with each other directly.

On financial strength, AM Best rates GEICO A++ (Superior), affirmed April 2026 and Farmers A (Excellent). Both are strong enough to pay claims; the gap matters far less to a driver than claims handling and price.

Neither company scored well on claims in 2025, and GEICO placed ahead of Farmers there. GEICO’s lower complaint ratio to regulators is the clearer advantage.

Driving apps, discounts and accident forgiveness

GEICO DriveEasy scores braking, cornering and phone use through an app, and GEICO says premiums vary with participation and the driving the app logs. It is offered in 47 states and D.C., but not in California, Hawaii or Vermont.

Farmers Signal gives an initial discount for enrolling, but riskier driving can raise your renewal premium. It is not available in Florida, Hawaii or New York, and the Signal discount is not offered in California.

Accident forgiveness. GEICO says drivers can earn Accident Forgiveness at no charge after five years of continuous GEICO coverage, which keeps the premium from rising after the first qualifying accident. Farmers sells accident forgiveness as an add-on that forgives one at-fault accident for every three years without one. It is not available in California, Hawaii, North Carolina, New York or South Carolina.

Farmers lists more than 20 auto discounts, including savings of 10% or more for bundling home and auto, and group discounts through some employers and associations. GEICO offers a military discount of up to 15%. GEICO’s free, earned accident forgiveness is easier to get than Farmers’ paid add-on.

Agents, availability and how you buy

Farmers sells through exclusive Farmers agents, some independent agents, and online and by phone. GEICO sells mostly online and by phone with a limited network of local agents. If you want a named agent who handles your auto, home and umbrella policies together, Farmers is built for that.

GEICO sells in all 50 states and D.C. Farmers stopped selling Farmers-branded auto, home and umbrella policies in Florida in 2023, and it does not sell in every other state, so check by ZIP code too.

Farmers offers extras such as new car replacement, accident forgiveness and rideshare coverage. GEICO does not sell gap insurance, according to NerdWallet. Farmers also disclosed in 2025 that a vendor database breach exposed data for about 1.07 million customers.

A practical approach: get a GEICO quote online first, then ask a Farmers agent to beat it with a home and auto bundle. If the agent cannot get close, the lower GEICO price is hard to argue with.
