Quick verdict

Home Chef is the better pick for most households that want dinner every week. It publishes its prices (dinners from $7.99 a serving, about $9.99 on average), has a big menu with oven-ready and 15-minute meals, and holds an A- BBB rating as an accredited business. Blue Apron's advantage is flexibility: since August 2025 you can buy one week without joining a subscription. The catch is reliability, since its fulfillment partner went bankrupt in April 2026 and customers reported late and incomplete boxes during the switch to Misfits Market.

Price: which is cheaper?

Home Chef is easier to price. Its site lists dinners from $7.99 a serving and says standard meals average $9.99 a serving, with the per-serving cost changing with your order size. Extras are priced separately: breakfasts from $4.98, lunches from $9.98 and desserts from $3.98 a serving. The first box ships free under its current promotion, and later boxes carry a shipping fee. The minimum weekly order is $50.95 including shipping on the Home Chef Plan and $82.91 on the Family Plan.

Blue Apron prices each item as you add it, so there is no single per-serving number to compare. Its site blocked our automated check, so we could not confirm current menu prices. Blue Apron’s membership FAQ, archived in July 2026, listed shipping at $11.49 per delivery, or free with Blue Apron+ at $9.99 a month or $99.99 a year. Autoship takes 5% off recurring orders.

For a couple ordering three dinners a week, the deciding numbers are the cart total and the shipping line. Build the same week at both before you pay, and remember that intro discounts end after the first few boxes.

Subscription, skipping and canceling

This is Blue Apron’s biggest advantage. Since August 19, 2025 it has not required a subscription: you pick meals for one delivery and check out. If you want regular boxes, Autoship repeats the order and takes 5% off, and you can turn it off in your account. Blue Apron+ is a separate $9.99 a month membership that renews until you cancel.

Home Chef is a weekly subscription. A box ships every week unless you skip it, and the menu locks at noon Central time on the Friday before your delivery. Miss that and you pay for the box. Skipping, pausing and canceling are handled in your account, and Home Chef sends deliveries Sunday through Friday on the day you choose.

If you tend to forget weekly deadlines, Blue Apron’s model removes the most common billing complaint in this category. If you plan to cook from a kit most weeks anyway, Home Chef’s Friday cutoff is easy to remember, and a calendar reminder covers it.

Delivery reliability and complaints

Reliability is where the two split in 2026. Blue Apron relied on one company, FreshRealm, to make and ship its boxes. FreshRealm filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy on April 27, 2026, and Misfits Market took over. During the switch, customers reported late and canceled deliveries, missing ingredients and slow support. Blue Apron acknowledged the problems and offered refunds or credits.

We found no similar supplier change at Home Chef, which Kroger owns. That doesn’t mean every box arrives perfect: Home Chef’s Trustpilot score is 2.3 out of 5 from 3,876 reviews, with complaints about thawed or missing items and unexpected charges after a missed skip. Blue Apron’s is 2.4.

The BBB gives Home Chef an A- as an accredited business, with 193 complaints in three years. Blue Apron rates D- and is not accredited, with 51 complaints. Home Chef also advertises that you don’t pay if you aren’t fully satisfied, subject to its terms. Whichever you pick, unpack the box the day it arrives and report problems with photos right away.
