HelloFresh Review: Is This Meal Delivery Service Worth It?

HelloFresh legitimacy and licensing

Yes. HelloFresh is run by HelloFresh SE, a Berlin company founded in 2011 and listed on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange. Its U.S. business is based at 28 Liberty Street in New York, and the BBB lists it as operating since 2012. The group also owns Factor, which sells prepared meals, and the budget kit EveryPlate.

The BBB rates HelloFresh A+, though it is not accredited, and lists 862 complaints in the last three years. On Trustpilot it averages 3.4 out of 5 from 99,679 reviews, with 46% five star and 10% one star, and the company replies to almost every negative review.

The business is shrinking: HelloFresh SE reported Q2 2026 revenue of about 1.5 billion euros, down 7.8% in constant currency, with 21.8 million orders, down 13.7%. The company says it is choosing profit over growth, which so far has meant less discounting, not service cuts.

HelloFresh cost explained

HelloFresh prices by the serving. Its plans page lists 3 meals for 2 people at $59.94 a week, or $9.99 a serving, and says prices start at $7.99 a serving on larger plans. Standard shipping is $10.99 a box, so that common plan costs about $70.93 a week, or $11.82 a serving. Premium recipes and add-ons such as desserts and extra protein cost more.

HelloFresh Plus is an optional membership that gives free standard shipping and $20 off premium meals each week. The annual plan is $99 plus tax; the monthly price renews every 4 weeks and is shown at checkout. If you order most weeks, Plus pays for itself in about 9 boxes. You can cancel within 48 hours for a full refund if you haven’t used it.

Big first-box discounts are common. Judge the service on the regular price, because the discount drops off after the first few boxes.

What you get: menu, plans and diets

HelloFresh advertises 100+ recipes each week. When you sign up you pick a preference, such as chef’s choice, veggie, pescatarian, calorie smart (meals around 650 calories or less), quick or family friendly. The preference only sorts the menu, so you can still choose any recipe.

Plans cover 2, 3, 4 or 6 people. Every recipe needs prep and cooking, usually with a few pots and pans to wash. Each recipe lists nutrition facts including sodium, which matters because many standard recipes are high in salt.

HelloFresh packs ingredients in facilities that handle common allergens, so it isn’t a safe pick for severe allergies. If you’d rather heat and eat, the same company sells Factor prepared meals.

HelloFresh complaints and how to avoid problems

The most common complaints on the BBB and Trustpilot are missing or damaged ingredients, late boxes, produce that arrives past its best, shipping costs and being charged for a box the customer meant to skip.

Food safety: in September 2022 the USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service issued a public health alert for ground beef in HelloFresh kits shipped July 2 to 21, 2022, after it was linked to E. coli illnesses. In October 2025 FSIS issued another public health alert, for two FreshRealm-made HelloFresh Ready Made Meals (Cheesy Pulled Pork Pepper Pasta and Unstuffed Peppers with Ground Turkey) after spinach in them tested positive for listeria. Check the FSIS recall list if you keep kit meat or ready meals in the freezer.

To limit problems: unpack and refrigerate the box the day it arrives, photograph anything missing or spoiled, and report it right away for a credit. Set a calendar reminder for the weekly cutoff, and check your email for order confirmations.

How to skip or cancel HelloFresh

You can skip weeks, pause or cancel in your HelloFresh account on the website or app. The deadline is 11:59 p.m. Pacific time, 5 days before your next delivery. If you cancel after that, the upcoming box ships and is charged. HelloFresh bills weekly, not monthly.

Canceling meal deliveries doesn’t cancel HelloFresh Plus. Go to Account Settings, then HF Plus, to end the membership; benefits last through the paid period.

After canceling, check your account shows no upcoming deliveries and keep the confirmation email. If you’re billed anyway, dispute it with HelloFresh first, then your card issuer.

Lawsuits and settlements

In 2025 HelloFresh agreed to a $7.5 million settlement in People of the State of California v. Grocery Delivery E-Services USA Inc. (Santa Clara County Superior Court, case 25CV472270). The state said HelloFresh didn’t clearly disclose automatic renewal terms. The claim deadline for eligible California customers was December 17, 2025. HelloFresh did not admit wrongdoing.

In 2021 a federal court approved a $14 million settlement resolving claims that HelloFresh made telemarketing calls to numbers on the Do Not Call registry. If you get marketing texts you didn’t agree to, reply STOP and report them to the FTC at donotcall.gov.

Who should look elsewhere

Look elsewhere if your main goal is saving money: EveryPlate, HelloFresh’s budget brand, lists $6.99 a serving plus $10.99 shipping, and a home meal plan with grocery pickup costs less still. Look elsewhere too if you don’t want to cook (Factor or other prepared meals fit better), if you live in Alaska or Hawaii, or if you need meals made in an allergen-free facility.
