Instant Checkmate and TruthFinder are sister brands in the PeopleConnect group, registered at the same San Diego address, and they were named together in a $5.8 million FTC settlement in 2023. Because the reports are so alike, price and track record decide it, and TruthFinder comes out ahead: $29.99 a month against $35.47, $70.99 for three months against $85.13, and a 3.4 Trustpilot score against Instant Checkmate's 1.5. Instant Checkmate's one advantage is a one-time $3.99 PDF fee instead of a monthly add-on. Neither may be used for hiring, renting, credit or insurance decisions.

Ratings and complaint records
Our score and sub-scores from each company's review, with the facts both reviews list.
Two brands, one company
Instant Checkmate, founded in 2010, and TruthFinder are both part of PeopleConnect, which also runs Intelius. California’s data broker registry lists both at 375 Camino De La Reina, Suite 400, in San Diego. They draw on similar public record and commercial data, offer similar search types (name, phone, email and address) and use similar membership billing.
The FTC treated them as one case. In September 2023 the agency announced that TruthFinder and Instant Checkmate would pay $5.8 million to settle charges that they violated the Fair Credit Reporting Act, overstated the accuracy of their reports, labeled some records such as traffic tickets as criminal records, and used undisclosed paid reviews. The order requires an FCRA compliance monitoring program and bars accuracy misrepresentations. Instant Checkmate had already paid a $525,000 penalty to the FTC in 2014 over FCRA compliance.
Because the products overlap so closely, the useful comparison is price, billing terms and how each brand treats customers, not the data itself. If one site returns a thin result, the other is unlikely to find much more.
Price and billing
TruthFinder is cheaper across the board. Its pricing page, dated September 27, 2026, lists people search at $29.99 for one month, $70.99 for three months and $124.99 for six months. Instant Checkmate’s latest archived pricing page, from July 10, 2026, lists $35.47 for one month and $85.13 for three months, with no six-month plan.
Over three months, that is $70.99 at TruthFinder against $85.13 at Instant Checkmate, a $14.14 difference for comparable reports.
The add-ons differ:
- Phone lookups only: $4.99 a month at TruthFinder, $5.99 at Instant Checkmate.
- PDF downloads: a one-time $3.99 at Instant Checkmate, or a $4.99 a month add-on at TruthFinder that also includes report monitoring.
- Extras: Instant Checkmate sells dark web monitoring for $1.99 a month; TruthFinder sells reverse email lookups for $29.73 a month.
Both memberships renew until you cancel. Instant Checkmate says that once a term has started you pay for the full term even if you cancel early. TruthFinder says cancelling stops the next charge and that refunds are handled case by case. Both sites may bill promotional prices shown at signup, so check the amount on the checkout page.
Complaints and reviews
Both brands hold an A+ rating and BBB accreditation. Instant Checkmate has been accredited since January 2014 and shows 139 complaints in three years. TruthFinder has been accredited since July 2018 and shows 550 complaints in three years, with 590 customer reviews, reflecting a larger customer base.
Trustpilot is where they split. TruthFinder scores 3.4 out of 5 from 3,463 reviews, with 50% five star and 29% one star, and it replies to 87% of negative reviews. Instant Checkmate scores 1.5 out of 5 from 458 reviews, and its complaints focus on recurring charges and refunds.
The App Store ratings are close: Instant Checkmate 4.7 out of 5 from 1,296 ratings and TruthFinder Search 4.5 from 6,279.
Instant Checkmate had no complaints in the CFPB database when we checked, which is expected for a people search site that is not a consumer reporting agency.
Most billing complaints on both sites come from people who signed up for one search and missed the renewal. Set a calendar reminder to cancel on the day you join if you only need one lookup.
Limits and how to opt out
Neither site is a consumer reporting agency. Both say their reports cannot be used to decide eligibility for credit, employment, insurance or housing, including tenant screening. To screen an applicant or tenant, use a company that sells FCRA reports with the person’s consent.
Treat criminal results from either site as leads, not proof. The 2023 FTC case centered on mislabeled criminal records, so look up any record on the county or state court website that holds it. NSOPW.gov, run by the Justice Department, is the free primary source for sex offender registries.
To remove your own listing, use each site’s removal tool. They are separate listings, so opting out of one does not remove you from the other. Both respond quickly according to their California registry filings: in 2024 TruthFinder completed 58,324 of 61,672 deletion requests and Instant Checkmate completed 23,244 of 24,499, each with a median response of one day.
California residents can also use the state’s Delete Request and Opt-out Platform (DROP) to reach all registered data brokers with one request. Check again every few months, since new records can recreate a listing.
