KAYAK vs. Expedia for flights and hotels

KAYAK is a free search engine that compares hundreds of sites, then sends you elsewhere to book. Expedia sells the trip itself, with One Key rewards and one company to call.

Quick verdict

KAYAK and Expedia do different jobs, so most travelers are better off using both. KAYAK, owned by Booking Holdings, searches hundreds of airlines, hotels and agencies (Expedia included) and adds free Price Alerts and a 7-day Price Forecast, but it cannot change, cancel or refund a booking. Expedia, run by Expedia Group, is an online travel agency: you pay Expedia, it manages the reservation, and hotel stays earn OneKeyCash. Search on KAYAK to see the spread of prices, then book wherever the total and the support you will need line up, which is often Expedia, the airline or the hotel directly.

Search engine versus travel agency

KAYAK is a metasearch site. You enter a route or a city, and it shows prices from airlines, hotel chains and online travel agencies side by side. When you pick one, you usually leave KAYAK and pay on that provider’s site. KAYAK’s terms say your contract is with the provider, which sets the price and fees and handles changes and refunds. KAYAK earns money when partners pay for clicks, bookings and ads.

Expedia is an online travel agency. You search, book and pay on Expedia, and it manages the reservation. It sells flights, hotels, vacation rentals, rental cars, packages and activities, and its 10-K says it supports travelers 24 hours a day by virtual agent, phone, chat or email.

The two belong to rival groups. KAYAK is part of Booking Holdings, which also owns Booking.com, Priceline and Agoda. Expedia is part of Expedia Group, which also owns Hotels.com, Vrbo and a majority stake in trivago, a metasearch rival of KAYAK. Expedia’s own prices often appear inside KAYAK’s results, which is why the most useful question is not which one to use, but where to finish the booking.

Flights: which finds a cheaper fare?

Neither site guarantees the lowest fare. KAYAK’s strength is breadth and timing. It searches hundreds of sites at once, its free Price Alerts email you when a tracked fare moves by about 10%, and its Price Forecast predicts whether a round-trip fare is likely to rise or fall over the next seven days, with a confidence level. KAYAK is clear that the forecast is not a guarantee.

KAYAK’s Hacker Fares combine two one-way tickets, sometimes on different airlines, to beat a round-trip price. They are two separate tickets: if one flight is cancelled or delayed, the other airline has no duty to rebook you, so leave extra time and read each ticket’s rules.

Expedia sells the ticket itself and offers flight price tracking in its app. Since its One Key changes on July 28, 2026, flights no longer earn OneKeyCash, though they still count toward One Key tier status. Package deals that combine a flight with a hotel or car can price lower than booking each part separately.

A practical approach: track the route on KAYAK, then compare the airline’s own site with the cheapest agency listed. If the gap is small, booking with the airline usually gives you the easiest path for changes and refunds.

Hotels and rewards

For hotels, KAYAK compares rates from booking sites and hotel chains, and you finish on the site you choose. It has no rewards program of its own.

Expedia lists about 3.6 million lodging properties across Expedia Group, including Vrbo homes, according to its 10-K. Its One Key program is shared with Hotels.com and Vrbo. Under terms effective July 28, 2026, members earn OneKeyCash on eligible hotel and rental bookings at a rate set by tier:

  • Blue: 1% back
  • Silver and Gold: 2% back
  • Platinum: 3% back

OneKeyCash spends at $1 for $1 on eligible bookings and stays active as long as you make an eligible booking at least once every 18 months. Expedia’s Hotel Price Guarantee ended for new bookings on the same date, so you can no longer claim the difference if you find the room cheaper after booking.

One catch applies to any agency booking: you usually do not earn the hotel chain’s own points or elite perks. If you are loyal to one chain, compare against booking direct.

Since May 12, 2025, the FTC’s fee rule requires U.S. hotel prices to include mandatory fees such as resort fees in the total shown. Taxes can still be added at checkout, so compare final totals.

Support when plans change

This is the biggest practical difference. KAYAK says it cannot change, cancel or refund a booking. If you book through KAYAK with a small agency you have never heard of, that agency owns the problem, and its support may be weak. KAYAK’s U.S. terms also include an arbitration clause for disputes with KAYAK itself.

With Expedia, you contact Expedia, and it works with the airline or hotel for you. That does not mean every case goes well. Expedia rates 3.5 out of 5 on Trustpilot from 24,375 reviews, 58% of them one star, and its BBB profile shows 7,524 complaints in three years, though it keeps an A+ rating and BBB accreditation. Most low reviews describe customer service and refund delays.

KAYAK rates higher on Trustpilot, 4.1 out of 5 from 4,909 reviews, but many complaints there are about third-party sellers KAYAK sent people to. KAYAK’s BBB profile shows an A- rating and 35 complaints in three years, and it is not accredited.

Whichever you use, contact companies only through the details on your confirmation email or their official sites, never phone numbers from search ads.

Frequently asked questions

Is KAYAK cheaper than Expedia?

KAYAK does not sell travel, it compares prices, and Expedia's prices often appear in its results. KAYAK can show you a lower price elsewhere, but the final total depends on the seller you book with.

Do you book directly on KAYAK?

Usually no. KAYAK sends you to the airline, hotel or agency you choose, and that company holds your reservation. KAYAK says it cannot change, cancel or refund bookings.

Are KAYAK and Expedia the same company?

No. KAYAK is owned by Booking Holdings, which also owns Booking.com and Priceline. Expedia is owned by Expedia Group, which also owns Hotels.com, Vrbo and most of trivago.

Does Expedia have a price match?

Expedia's Hotel Price Guarantee ended for new bookings on July 28, 2026.

Do flights earn Expedia rewards?

Not anymore. Since July 28, 2026, flights no longer earn OneKeyCash, though they still count toward One Key tier status. Eligible hotel and rental bookings earn 1% to 3% back by tier.

Is KAYAK's Price Forecast accurate?

KAYAK shows a confidence level with each forecast for round-trip fares over the next seven days and says the forecast is not guaranteed.

What is a Hacker Fare?

A KAYAK result that combines two one-way tickets, sometimes on different airlines. It can be cheaper, but a problem with one ticket does not protect the other.

Which is better if I might need to cancel?

Booking with Expedia or directly with the airline or hotel gives you one company to deal with. Through KAYAK, you deal with whichever seller you clicked to, so check its cancellation terms first.
