Bitdefender Total Security is the better pick for most people. Both scored 6 out of 6 for protection, performance and usability in every AV-TEST Windows round of 2026, but in AV-Comparatives' March 2026 malware test Bitdefender earned the top ADVANCED+ award with 4 false alarms while McAfee got ADVANCED with 14. Bitdefender also has a much better customer record: 4.3 on Trustpilot and 77 BBB complaints in three years, against McAfee's 1.3 and 450, mostly about auto-renewal billing. McAfee wins on first-year price ($39.99 vs $59.99 for five devices), on system impact, and on its VPN, while Bitdefender's built-in VPN is capped at 200 MB a day per device.

Ratings and complaint records

Protection: both excellent, Bitdefender cleaner
Independent labs rate both products near the top. AV-TEST, the German lab that tests consumer antivirus every two months, gave both McAfee Total Protection and Bitdefender Total Security 6 out of 6 for protection, performance and usability in every Windows round from February through August 2026. Bitdefender earned the Top Product label each time.
AV-Comparatives’ March 2026 Malware Protection Test separates them more:
- Bitdefender: 97.6% offline and online detection, 99.94% protection rate, 4 false alarms, ADVANCED+ award.
- McAfee: 86.1% offline and 99.2% online detection, 99.97% protection rate, 14 false alarms, ADVANCED award.
Both blocked nearly every sample once all their layers ran. The difference is in how much McAfee leans on its cloud lookups (offline detection drops to 86.1%) and in false alarms, where McAfee flagged 14 clean files against Bitdefender’s 4. False alarms matter because they can quarantine legitimate software or train you to ignore warnings. AV-Comparatives notes that several other brands, including G Data and VIPRE, license Bitdefender’s engine.
Both companies were also included in AV-Comparatives’ July to August 2026 Real-World Protection Test; the per-product figures were published only as a chart, so we have not quoted them.
Price: what you pay in year one and after
McAfee is cheaper to start. As listed in October 2026:
- McAfee Total Protection: 1 device $29.99 for the first year, then $89.99; 5 devices $39.99, then $119.99. McAfee+ plans cover unlimited devices from $49.99 for the first year.
- Bitdefender Total Security: Individual, 1 account and 5 devices, $59.99 for the first year; Family, 5 accounts and 25 devices, $79.99. Two-year terms were listed at $119.99 and $159.99.
McAfee publishes its renewal prices, and they are about three times the first-year rate. Bitdefender’s product page does not show a renewal figure, only that it may be higher than the first-year price. Both renew automatically if you enroll. McAfee charges 30 days before your term ends; Bitdefender says it starts emailing 30 days before expiration. Whichever you buy, put the renewal date in your calendar and check the price before it charges.
On refunds, McAfee gives 30 days from a first purchase and 60 days from a renewal charge on annual plans, but none on monthly plans. Bitdefender offers a 30-day money-back guarantee.
Features: VPN and identity tools
Both suites cover Windows, macOS, Android and iOS and include antivirus with web and ransomware protection and a firewall. Bitdefender also includes a password manager. The extras differ:
- VPN: McAfee Total Protection includes Secure VPN. Bitdefender Total Security includes a VPN limited to 200 MB of traffic per day per device, enough for checking email on public Wi-Fi but not for streaming. For unlimited traffic, Bitdefender sells Premium VPN as an add-on.
- Identity: McAfee includes identity monitoring with alerts and a Scam Detector for texts, email and video. Bitdefender includes an email breach check and scam protection that blocks phishing and fake shops.
- Family: Bitdefender’s Family plan adds parental controls with time limits and location tracking across 25 devices. McAfee’s family features sit in its McAfee+ Family plans.
If you already pay for a VPN or identity monitoring service, McAfee’s extras matter less and Bitdefender’s cleaner test record carries more weight.
Speed and system impact
Both scored 6 out of 6 for performance in AV-TEST’s 2026 rounds, meaning neither slowed common tasks enough to lose points. AV-Comparatives’ April 2026 Performance Test, which measures file copying, app launches, downloads and installs, gives a finer split. McAfee had the lowest impact score of all products tested, 3.3. Bitdefender scored 9.6, ninth of the field and behind Norton (5.3) and Avast (5.5), though both still earned the top ADVANCED+ award. Microsoft Defender scored 12.9.
On a modern PC you are unlikely to feel the difference in daily use. On an older laptop with a slow drive, McAfee’s lighter footprint is a real advantage. Bitdefender includes a Battery Mode for laptops, a OneClick Optimizer, and a profile that pauses pop-ups and background tasks while you work or play.
The performance test also matters for how each product gets its detection. AV-Comparatives found McAfee’s offline detection at 86.1%, so much of its protection depends on cloud lookups while you are online. Bitdefender detected 97.6% offline, which helps on a laptop that is often away from Wi-Fi. If you travel or work offline often, weigh that against McAfee’s lighter footprint.
Support and customer reputation
This is where the two diverge most. McAfee holds 1.3 out of 5 on Trustpilot across 3,481 reviews, 87% one star, and has not replied to negative reviews there. The BBB lists McAfee, LLC as not rated with 450 complaints in the last three years. Most complaints are about automatic renewals customers did not expect or could not easily cancel.
Bitdefender holds 4.3 out of 5 on Trustpilot across 12,658 reviews, 69% five star, and replies to 98% of negative reviews. Its U.S. BBB profile shows an A+ rating, not accredited, with 77 complaints in three years. Complaints mention the interface, upgrade prompts and occasional false positives.
Watch for scam emails in either name. Fake renewal notices that use the McAfee or Bitdefender brand are common. Manage your subscription by typing the company’s address yourself, never from a link or phone number in an unexpected message.
For renewals, McAfee lists its full renewal prices, which is more transparent than Bitdefender’s product page, but its practice of charging 30 days early is what drives most complaints. With either company, you can turn off automatic renewal in your account right after buying and still keep protection until the term ends.
