Quick verdict

These are different kinds of sites, and Expedia Group controls both. trivago is a free price comparison tool that shows offers from many booking sites, including Expedia, and usually sends you to one of them to pay. Expedia is an online travel agency that takes the booking, offers 24/7 support and pays One Key rewards. For most people the better place to actually book is Expedia or another site trivago surfaces, after a quick trivago search to check whether a lower total exists elsewhere.

How trivago and Expedia differ

trivago is a metasearch site. You enter a destination and dates, and it shows prices for the same hotel from online travel agencies, hotel chains and other booking sites. When you click an offer, you usually leave trivago and pay on that site. trivago’s own help center says it is not a party to bookings made on other sites. It earns money when advertisers pay for clicks or bookings.

Expedia is an online travel agency. You search, book and pay on Expedia, or reserve a pay at the hotel rate through it, and Expedia manages the booking. Beyond hotels, it sells flights, rental cars, packages and activities, and its Vrbo sister brand lists vacation homes.

The twist is ownership. Expedia Group holds shares worth 59.2% of trivago’s issued shares and 83.9% of its voting power, according to trivago’s 2025 annual report, and its own 10-K calls trivago its majority owned hotel metasearch company. Expedia is also one of trivago’s biggest customers: Expedia Group brands, including Expedia, Hotels.com and Vrbo, paid 34% of trivago’s referral revenue in 2025. Booking Holdings brands, including Booking.com, Agoda and Priceline, paid 40%.

So the real question is not which one to use, but where to finish the booking after you compare.

Which shows the lower hotel price?

Neither one guarantees the lowest price. trivago doesn’t sell rooms on most offers; it shows other sites’ prices, so any saving comes from spotting a cheaper offer than the one you would have found on your own. Its 2025 annual report says advertisers that pay higher bids generally get better placement. In 2022 Australia’s Federal Court ordered trivago to pay about $31.2 million (A$44.7 million) after finding its rankings leaned on which site paid the highest click fee, not on the cheapest rate.

Expedia sets its own rates and shows Member Prices to signed-in One Key members on select hotels. Its Hotel Price Guarantee ended for new bookings on July 28, 2026, so you can no longer claim a refund of the difference if you find the same room cheaper elsewhere after booking.

In the US, the FTC fee rule in effect since May 12, 2025 requires hotel and short term rental prices to include mandatory fees, such as resort fees, in the total price shown. Taxes can still be added later, so compare the final total on the checkout page:

  • Search trivago and open the full list of offers, not only the highlighted one.
  • Open Expedia’s price for the same room, bed type and cancellation terms.
  • Check the hotel’s own website, then book the lowest total with terms you can live with.

Rewards: One Key vs nothing

trivago has no loyalty program. Some offers show member rates when you log in, but you earn nothing to spend later.

Expedia uses One Key, a shared program across Expedia, Hotels.com and Vrbo. Under terms effective July 28, 2026, members earn OneKeyCash on eligible hotel and rental bookings at a rate set by tier:

  • Blue: 1% back
  • Silver and Gold: 2% back
  • Platinum: 3% back

Flights no longer earn OneKeyCash, though each hotel night, flight and car day still counts toward tier status. OneKeyCash spends at $1 for $1 on eligible bookings and stays active as long as you make an eligible booking at least once every 18 months. The Points Guy reports that Gold and Platinum members also get airport lounge access through LoungeKey when a flight is delayed 90 minutes or more.

The catch: booking a hotel through Expedia usually means you don’t earn the hotel chain’s own points or elite perks. If you’re loyal to one chain, compare against booking direct.

Support, changes and refunds

This is where the two differ most. With trivago, the company that took your payment owns the reservation. Changes, cancellations and refunds go through that site under its terms, and trivago usually can’t step in. Many of trivago’s one star Trustpilot reviews describe exactly this: a problem with a booking site and nobody at trivago who can fix it. If you used Book & Go, your confirmation shows that trivago’s booking service handled it.

With Expedia, you contact Expedia. Its 10-K says it offers support 24 hours a day by virtual agent, phone, chat or email. That doesn’t mean every case goes smoothly: Expedia has a 3.5 on Trustpilot from 24,375 reviews, 58% of them one star, and 7,524 BBB complaints in three years, though it keeps an A+ BBB rating and replies to 66% of negative Trustpilot reviews. Low reviews mostly describe customer service and booking problems.

Either way, use only the contact details on your confirmation email or the company’s official site, not phone numbers from search ads or forums.

How to use both

Because trivago is a search tool and Expedia is a seller, many travelers use them together:

  • Start on trivago to see the spread of prices for your hotel and dates across sites, including Expedia, Hotels.com, Booking.com and the hotel itself.
  • Book on Expedia when its total is the same or close and you value OneKeyCash, one support line, or a package with flights or a car.
  • Book on another site when it is clearly cheaper for the same room and cancellation terms, and you trust that seller.
  • Book direct when you’re loyal to a hotel chain or expect to change plans, since the hotel then holds your reservation.

Before you pay, confirm the room type, the cancellation deadline and the total with taxes and fees on the final page. That page, not the search result, is what you will be charged. If the gap between sites is only a few dollars, the site with the better cancellation terms and support is usually worth it.

Frequently asked questions

Is trivago owned by Expedia?

Yes, mostly. Expedia Group holds shares representing 59.2% of trivago's issued shares and 83.9% of its voting power, according to trivago's 2025 annual report. trivago is still a separate Nasdaq listed company (TRVG) based in Germany.

Is trivago cheaper than Expedia?

trivago doesn't sell most rooms itself; it shows prices from sites including Expedia side by side. If another site has a lower total for the same room, trivago can help you find it. Placement is influenced by advertiser bids, so open the full list of offers.

Can I book on trivago instead of Expedia?

Usually you click through and book on another site. Some offers can be booked on trivago through Book & Go, run by its trivago DEALS business. Expedia lets you book and pay on Expedia directly.

Who do I contact to cancel a hotel I found on trivago?

The site that took your payment, shown on your confirmation email. trivago says it is not a party to bookings made on other sites, so it usually can't cancel or refund them.

Does Expedia still have a price guarantee?

Not for new bookings. Expedia's Hotel Price Guarantee ended on July 28, 2026 as part of One Key changes; eligible bookings made before that date still qualify.

Do I earn rewards with trivago?

No. trivago has no rewards program. Expedia pays 1% to 3% back in OneKeyCash on eligible hotel bookings, depending on your One Key tier.

Which is better for flights?

Expedia, since trivago is focused on hotels and other stays. Note that flights no longer earn OneKeyCash on Expedia after July 28, 2026, though they still count toward One Key tier status.

Are trivago and Expedia legit?

Yes. Both are public companies. Expedia Group trades on Nasdaq as EXPE and holds an A+ BBB rating for Expedia.com. trivago trades on Nasdaq as TRVG. trivago was penalized about $31.2 million (A$44.7 million) in Australia in 2022 over misleading hotel rate claims.
