Our verdict

MetLife vision insurance is a workplace and federal benefit, though. It is legitimate: Metropolitan Life Insurance Company underwrites it and holds an A+ financial strength rating from A.M. Best. MetLife's vision page sends you to your employer, and the plan most people can price is MetLife Federal Vision for federal employees, at $7.95 to $35.92 a month on the VSP Choice network. If your employer offers it, check which of MetLife's three networks your plan uses, because in-network stores and claim addresses differ.

MetLife, step by step

  1. Check your benefits package

MetLife vision is offered by employers during open enrollment and to federal employees through BENEFEDS. Your employer decides the plan design and the network.

  2. Find out your network

Your plan uses Davis Vision, Superior Vision or VSP Choice. Use MetLife's Find a Vision Provider tool with the right network selected.

  3. Book with an in-network provider

You do not need an ID card. Give the office your name, date of birth and network, and the provider files the claim.

  4. Out of network

Pay the provider in full, then submit a MetLife Vision claim form with an itemized receipt through MyBenefits or by mail.

  5. Use it once per benefit period

Glasses or contacts are covered once per frequency period, which your employer sets. You can get the exam at one office and eyewear at another.

MetLife vision insurance legitimacy and licensing

Yes. MetLife vision benefits are underwritten by Metropolitan Life Insurance Company, which A.M. Best rates A+ (Superior) for financial strength, with AA- from Fitch and S&P and Aa3 from Moody’s as of July 6, 2026. Davis Vision and Superior Vision, which run two of the networks, are part of the MetLife family of companies; VSP, which runs the VSP Choice network, is not affiliated with MetLife.

Company-wide reviews are weak. The BBB rates MetLife, Inc. A- with 709 complaints in three years, and Trustpilot shows 1.1 out of 5 from 837 reviews. Most of those complaints are about disability and life insurance claims rather than vision, but they are worth reading. To check MetLife’s complaint record with regulators, use the NAIC Consumer Insurance Search or your state insurance department.

Can you buy MetLife vision insurance on your own?

Not from MetLife directly, based on its website in October 2026. MetLife’s vision insurance page describes three group plans and a discount program and tells you to contact your employer, and its federal site sells MetLife Federal Vision to federal employees, annuitants and retired uniformed service members through BENEFEDS.

If you want a MetLife family network on your own, Superior Vision sells individual plans, insured by National Guardian Life and administered by MetLife’s Versant Health. Older reviews that quote MetLife individual vision plans from $13 a month could not be matched to any current MetLife page.

How much MetLife vision insurance costs

Employer plan premiums are set in each employer’s contract, often with part paid by the employer, and MetLife does not publish them. The published example is MetLife Federal Vision: the Standard Option costs $7.95 a month for self only, $15.90 for self plus one and $23.86 for a family; the High Option costs $11.98, $23.94 and $35.92.

On the federal plan, in-network exams are covered in full once a year and retinal screening costs up to $39. The Standard Option gives a $190 allowance for featured frame brands, $150 for standard brands and $85 at Costco, Walmart or Sam’s Club, with a $20 eyewear copay; the High Option raises those to $250, $200 and $200 with no copay. Elective contact lenses get $120 on Standard and $150 on High.

What customers say about MetLife

Recurring themes across the review sites and complaint records listed above, not individual quotes.

Common praise

  • Large networks that include Costco, Walmart, Warby Parker and LensCrafters on some plans
  • Providers file in-network claims for you
  • No ID card needed at the appointment

Common complaints

  • Hard to reach customer service
  • Slow or denied claims, mostly reported for disability and life products
  • Confusion over which network a plan uses

Davis Vision, Superior Vision and VSP Choice networks

Which network you are on depends on your employer’s plan. MetLife says the Davis Vision and Superior Vision networks include retail chains such as Warby Parker, LensCrafters, America’s Best, Costco Optical, Pearle Vision, Target Optical, Visionworks and Walmart Vision Centers, plus online stores such as Glasses.com and 1-800 Contacts. Davis Vision plans also offer an Exclusive Collection of frames. VSP Choice lets you pick any provider, with lower costs in network, and is the network for the federal plan.

Each network has its own phone line: 833-393-5433 for Davis Vision or Superior Vision plans and 1-855-638-3931 for VSP Choice.

Claims and how to avoid problems

In network, the provider checks eligibility and files the claim, so you pay only copays and anything above your allowance. Out of network, you pay in full and then send a MetLife Vision claim form and itemized receipt through MyBenefits or by mail; Davis Vision and Superior Vision claims go to P.O. Box 509, Troy, NY, and VSP Choice claims to PO Box 495918, Cincinnati, OH. Confirm your network before you book, keep receipts, and ask whether a store accepts the discount features, since MetLife notes not all providers do.

Your rights if a claim is denied

Employer vision plans are usually covered by ERISA, which gives you the right to a written reason for a denial and to appeal it under the plan. Federal plan members can ask OPM to review a disputed FEDVIP claim after MetLife’s own review. For any insurer, you can file a complaint with your state insurance department.

Alternatives to MetLife

  • VSP Individual Vision Plans Better if your employer does not offer MetLife and you want to buy a plan on your own on a large network. Read review
  • Superior Vision The closest way to get a MetLife family network as an individual, since Superior Vision sells individual plans insured by National Guardian Life. Read review
  • EyeMed Worth comparing if you shop at LensCrafters, Pearle Vision or Target Optical. Read review
  • Pay cash with an HSA or FSA If you need only an exam and one pair of glasses a year, paying out of pocket with pretax HSA or FSA money can cost less than a year of premiums.

Frequently asked questions

Does MetLife have vision insurance?

Yes. MetLife offers three group vision plans, on the Davis Vision, Superior Vision and VSP Choice networks, plus the VisionAccess discount program, through employers. It also sells MetLife Federal Vision to federal employees.

Can I buy MetLife vision insurance without an employer?

MetLife's website does not list an individual vision plan; it tells consumers to ask their employer. Superior Vision, a MetLife company, sells individual plans that are insured by National Guardian Life.

How much is MetLife vision insurance per month?

Employer premiums are not published. MetLife Federal Vision costs $7.95 to $23.86 a month on the Standard Option and $11.98 to $35.92 on the High Option, depending on how many people you cover.

What network does MetLife vision use?

It depends on your plan: Davis Vision, Superior Vision or VSP Choice. The federal plan uses VSP Choice.

Does MetLife vision cover Costco and Walmart?

MetLife lists Costco Optical and Walmart Vision Centers as in network for Davis Vision and Superior Vision plans, and the federal VSP Choice plan also includes Costco, Walmart and Sam's Club. Frame allowances at those stores can be lower, $85 on the federal Standard Option.

Do I need a MetLife vision card?

No. Tell the provider your network and give your full name and date of birth.

How do I file an out-of-network claim with MetLife vision?

Pay the provider, then submit a MetLife Vision claim form and itemized receipt through MyBenefits or by mail to the address for your network.

Is MetLife vision insurance worth it?

If your employer offers it and pays part of the premium, it usually pays off when you need an exam and glasses or contacts each year. Compare your premium to what you would pay in cash for those services.

Financially it is strong, with an A+ A.M. Best rating. Customer reviews are poor: A- at the BBB with 709 complaints in three years and 1.1 out of 5 on Trustpilot, mostly about disability and life claims.
