PeopleFinders Review: Is It Legit and Accurate?

PeopleFinders legitimacy and licensing

Yes, it is a real business, not a scam site. PeopleFinders has been online since 1999, and the BBB lists the business as started in 1987 in Sacramento. Its privacy notice names the operator as PeopleFinders, LLC, and it is registered with California’s privacy agency as a data broker. Its About page lists founder and chairman Rob Miller and CEO Amber Higgins, and says the company now works as a fully remote team.

Being legitimate is not the same as being trouble free. The BBB currently gives PeopleFinders an F rating, with 289 complaints in the last three years, and it is not accredited. Trustpilot is more positive at 4.2 out of 5 from about 3,100 reviews, but 10% of those are one star, and the negative reviews focus on recurring charges and refunds.

In 2024, Confi-Chek, Inc., the company named as the operator of PeopleFinders.com in that case, agreed to a $4,896,540 class settlement in Cook County, Illinois. The suit claimed that Illinois residents’ names and details were shown on PeopleFinders.com to promote subscriptions without consent between November 2, 2021 and January 1, 2023. The court did not decide who was right. We found no FTC enforcement case against PeopleFinders, though the FTC has acted against competitors such as TruthFinder, Instant Checkmate and Spokeo.

One naming trap: peoplefinder.com (no “s”) is a different site, listed in California’s registry under Intelius. Check the web address before you pay or opt out.

How much does PeopleFinders cost, and is it free?

Searching is free in the sense that you can see matching profiles, but the full report is not. PeopleFinders’ help center lists two memberships:

• Membership, $24.95 a month: available contact info, aliases, relatives and known associates.
• Premium Membership, $29.95 a month: adds available property records, assets, business records, criminal records, bankruptcies, liens and judgments.

It also sells one-time reports and runs discounted trials and limited-time specials, with prices that vary by offer. The help center explains that if you buy a single report with the 3-day trial offer, the full monthly membership is charged if you do not cancel within three days. Under the terms, a trial converts to the paid plan the day after it ends. A PeopleFinders Rewards add-on can also appear as its own charge, PPL*PF REWARDS.

The price page was last updated in 2023, and PeopleFinders’ live site blocked our automated check, so read the checkout screen for the exact price and renewal date before you pay.

How to cancel PeopleFinders and get a refund

The terms of use list three ways to cancel:

• Online: log in, open the Manage Account tab, go to Your Membership and click Cancel Membership.
• Contact form: at peoplefinders.com/contact, choose the option to cancel automatic renewal.
• Phone: call customer care at (800) 718-8997. The contact page lists hours of 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Pacific on weekdays and 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on weekends.

PeopleFinders does not accept cancellations by postal mail. After you cancel, the membership runs to the end of the period you paid for and then stops. Save the automated cancellation email, because the terms say it is the only proof accepted if you are charged afterward.

Refunds are limited. The terms say one-time purchases are not refunded, though you may get another search at no cost if a search returns nothing. The help center says refunds are case by case, you must call within 15 days of purchase, and email refund requests are not processed. App Store or Google Play purchases must be refunded through Apple or Google. If you see a charge you did not authorize, contact your card issuer as well.

How to remove your information from PeopleFinders

PeopleFinders’ opt-out is free and online only. As of October 2026 the form works like this:

1. Search for yourself on PeopleFinders and open your profile.
2. Copy the profile’s web address.
3. Paste it into the form at peoplefinders.com/opt-out, add an email address and complete the robot check.
4. Click the verification link PeopleFinders emails you. The request is not confirmed until you do.

PeopleFinders does not accept opt-out requests by mail, email or fax. Its help center says it blocks your records from display in databases it controls, but cannot remove data held by third parties. Its privacy notice adds that new public records keep arriving, so your information can show up again. The FTC gives the same warning about people search sites in general, so search for yourself again every few months.

California residents have another option. Since January 1, 2026 the state’s free Delete Request and Opt-out Platform (DROP) lets you send one deletion request to registered data brokers, including PeopleFinders. Brokers had to start processing these requests on August 1, 2026, and must check DROP at least every 45 days. In its 2025 registry report, PeopleFinders said it received 389 deletion requests and complied with all of them only in part, and denied 89,434 of about 1 million opt-out requests.

Under the CCPA, you can also ask PeopleFinders for a free copy of your own report every six months; it says it sends it by email within 45 days.

FCRA limits and how accurate the data is

PeopleFinders says plainly that it is not a consumer reporting agencyConsumer reporting agency. Its terms bar using any result to decide on employment, housing, credit or loans, insurance, education or business services. Using a people search report that way can expose a landlord or employer to legal risk, and the person you looked up gets none of the FCRA rights to see and dispute the report. For those decisions, use an FCRA-compliant screening company that gets the person’s written consent.

On accuracy, the terms say results are not guaranteed to be accurate or up to date, and some details are based on logic-based assumptions that match names, ages and addresses. The terms warn that mistaken identity can occur when relying only on name, age and address. PeopleFinders also says it cannot fix errors that come from source records; you have to correct them with the county court, recorder or agency that holds them. Its own figures, such as the number of records and data sources on its home page, are marketing claims we could not verify.

The terms also prohibit searching for minors or celebrities, stalking or harassing anyone, and reselling the data, and they note that phone numbers shown are not checked against the Do Not Call Registry.

PeopleFinders complaints and how to avoid problems

The most common complaints on Trustpilot are recurring charges after a trial or a report people thought was one time, refunds that are hard to get, renewal terms that were easy to miss, and trouble removing personal information. To protect yourself:

• Read the offer screen for the trial length and the price it converts to, and set a reminder a day before it ends.
• If you only need one answer, cancel right after you get it; you keep access through the paid period.
• Keep the cancellation email. The terms treat it as your only proof.
• Look for CFK*PEOPLEFINDERS, PPL*PEOPLEFINDERS or the PF REWARDS descriptors on your card statement.
• For billing disputes, call customer care first, then dispute with your card issuer or file with the BBB. Note that the terms require individual arbitration and waive class actions, with a written notice of dispute sent to the San Francisco mailing address.

Who should skip PeopleFinders

Skip it if you are a landlord, employer or lender, since the terms forbid those uses. Look elsewhere too if you want a single report with no chance of a subscription, or if a court or property record is all you need, because county clerk, court and assessor websites often provide those for free. If your goal is to get your own information off people search sites, the opt-out form and, in California, DROP cost nothing, so you do not need to buy a membership to do it.
