GEICO motorcycle insurance is legitimate coverage from one of the largest U.S. insurers, written by GEICO Indemnity Company, and it is a solid pick if you already have a GEICO car policy and want simple add-ons like $2,000 of custom parts coverage, stored gear coverage and trip interruption. It is not usually the cheapest: ValuePenguin's 2026 sample quotes put GEICO at $36 a month for full coverage, versus $22 to $24 at Dairyland, Progressive and Harley-Davidson. Service reviews are weak across GEICO as a whole, with a 1.3 out of 5 Trustpilot score and a 1.11 out of 5 BBB review average, mostly about car insurance, so get at least two other quotes before you switch.

Cons
- Not the cheapest: ValuePenguin found full coverage averages $36 a month, $13 more than Progressive
- GEICO's overall service reviews are poor, with long hold times and claim delays the top complaints
- Discounts vary by state and not all can be stacked
- Most extras, like total loss replacement and roadside help, cost more
- Fewer standard extras than Progressive, which includes $3,000 of custom parts coverage
Best for: Riders who already have GEICO car insurance and want a basic motorcycle policy with modest custom parts coverage in the same account.
Skip it if: Price is your top concern or your bike has more than a few thousand dollars of upgrades, since Dairyland, Progressive and Harley-Davidson quoted lower in ValuePenguin's study.

GEICO motorcycle insurance legitimacy and licensing
Yes. GEICO Motorcycle policies are underwritten by GEICO Indemnity Company, part of GEICO, which Berkshire Hathaway owns. GEICO says it has insured motorcycles since 1978 and cites an A++ (Superior) financial strength rating from AM Best, the highest grade, which speaks to its ability to pay claims.
Legitimate is not the same as well reviewed. GEICO’s BBB profile carries an A+ grade, but the business is not accredited, it logged 2,608 complaints in the last three years, and its customer reviews average 1.11 out of 5. Trustpilot rates GEICO 1.3 out of 5. Nearly all of those reviews are about car insurance, but the same claims and service teams back the GEICO brand.
In May 2026 GEICO reached an agreement with the Pennsylvania Attorney General over auto policy cancellations after new-customer reviews, agreeing to give new policyholders more time to send documents. It did not admit a violation, and the matter involved auto policies, not motorcycles.
GEICO motorcycle insurance cost
GEICO does not publish motorcycle rates. In ValuePenguin’s 2026 study of full coverage quotes (Comprehensive. Covers non-crash damage such as theft, fire, vandalism and weather. Compare motorcycle insurance companies and collision plus liability above state minimums), GEICO averaged $36 a month, about $432 a year. That is $3 a month above the $33 national average and well above the cheapest companies in the same study: Dairyland at $22, Progressive at $23 and Harley-Davidson at $24.
Your price depends on your bike, age, riding history, location and how much coverage you buy. GEICO’s own cost guidance lists the type and model of motorcycle, your age, driving history and where you live. Smaller standard, commuter and cruiser bikes are usually cheaper to insure than sport bikes.
An earlier version of this page said GEICO averaged $364 a year. We could not find a current source for that number, so use the ValuePenguin figure as a rough benchmark and get real quotes.
What GEICO motorcycle insurance covers
GEICO policies can include the usual coverages: bodily injury and property damage liability, collision, comprehensive (theft, fire, vandalism), medical payments or personal injury protection, uninsured and underinsured motorist, and towing and labor. Accessories coverage requires comprehensive or collision, and GEICO says collision also protects your helmet.
GEICO’s Motorcycle and Offroad options add:
- Custom parts or equipment: $2,000 of coverage, with the option to buy more.
- Stored gear: up to $3,000 for gear kept on the bike.
- Riding apparel: help paying for damaged protective gear after a covered loss.
- Emergency Road Service with trip interruption: $200 a day and $500 per occurrence for travel costs if the bike breaks down on a trip.
- Total loss replacement. Coverage that pays the price of a new bike instead of depreciated value if yours is totaled. Compare motorcycle insurance companies: for an added premium, a covered total loss is settled using the MSRP of a new bike of the same make and model. Restrictions apply.
- Transport trailer protection while you haul the bike.
GEICO also lists a deductible reduction plan ($100 credit per loss-free policy period) and claims forgiveness that waives the surcharge on certain first losses for eligible customers.
What customers say about GEICO
Recurring themes across the review sites and complaint records listed above, not individual quotes.
Common praise
- Easy online quotes and a well rated mobile app
- Convenience of bundling with a GEICO car policy
- Helpful individual agents once you reach a person
Common complaints
- Long phone holds and automated chat loops
- Premium increases at renewal or after a claim
- Slow or disputed claim payouts and total loss values
- Cancellations over missed payments or paperwork
GEICO motorcycle discounts
GEICO lists these motorcycle discounts, each subject to state rules, and notes that not all can be combined:
- Up to 10% for transferring a motorcycle policy from another insurer
- Up to 10% for insuring more than one motorcycle
- Up to 10% for mature riders
- Up to 10% at renewal
- Up to 10% for completing a Motorcycle Safety Foundation or military safety course
- Up to 20% for current MSF instructors
- Up to 10% on the motorcycle policy if you also insure a car or RV with GEICO
- Defensive driving and anti-theft device discounts
GEICO complaints and what riders report
Complaint data for GEICO is reported for the whole company, not the motorcycle line. The BBB publishes only 1 of every 20 GEICO complaints because of volume. Recurring themes on Trustpilot and BBB are long phone holds and chatbot loops, price increases at renewal or after a claim, slow or disputed claim payments, and cancellations tied to missed payments or paperwork.
To protect yourself, keep proof of every payment and policy change, photograph your bike and add-ons before you need to file, and ask for claim decisions in writing. If a claim stalls, file a complaint with your state insurance department.
Filing a claim and canceling
You can report and track a claim online, in the GEICO Mobile app or by phone, and GEICO says service is available 24 hours a day. Keep photos, a police report number if there is one and receipts for custom parts, since custom equipment above your coverage limit will not be paid.
GEICO advises against canceling in winter even if you do not ride, because comprehensive still covers theft, fire and damage in storage and a lapse can raise your next premium. If you do cancel, ask how any unused premium is refunded before you switch.
Alternatives to GEICO
-
Better for custom bikes and price, with $3,000 of custom parts coverage included and a $23 average in ValuePenguin's study.
-
Often the cheapest, at $22 a month on average, if you can accept a weaker complaint record.
-
Worth a quote if you want a local agent and up to $30,000 of added equipment coverage.
-
Liability-only coverage from any insurer
If your bike is older and paid off, carrying only your state's required liability can cut the premium, though you pay for your own bike's damage.

Frequently asked questions
Is GEICO good for motorcycle insurance?
It is a financially strong insurer with useful add-ons, but it is not usually the cheapest. ValuePenguin's 2026 quotes put GEICO at $36 a month for full coverage versus $23 at Progressive, and GEICO's overall service reviews are low.
Who underwrites GEICO motorcycle insurance?
GEICO says its motorcycle policies are underwritten by GEICO Indemnity Company. GEICO is owned by Berkshire Hathaway.
How much is GEICO motorcycle insurance?
GEICO does not publish rates. ValuePenguin's 2026 sample quotes averaged $36 a month for full coverage, but your price depends on your bike, age, riding record, location and coverage.
Does GEICO cover custom parts on a motorcycle?
Yes. GEICO lists $2,000 of custom parts or equipment coverage with the option to buy more, and accessories coverage requires comprehensive or collision. Keep receipts so you can prove what you added.
Does GEICO motorcycle insurance cover my helmet and gear?
GEICO says collision coverage protects your helmet, and it offers coverage for gear stored on the bike (up to $3,000) and for damaged riding apparel after a covered loss.
Does GEICO offer roadside assistance for motorcycles?
Yes, as an option. Towing and labor covers jump starts and tows, and Emergency Road Service adds trip interruption of $200 a day and $500 per occurrence if your bike breaks down on a trip.
What motorcycle discounts does GEICO offer?
Up to 10% each for policy transfer, multiple bikes, mature riders, renewal, a safety course and bundling with a car or RV, plus up to 20% for MSF instructors. Availability varies by state and not all discounts stack.

Yes. GEICO lists sport bikes, cruisers, touring bikes, Enduros, scooters, dirt bikes, trikes and some custom bikes. ATVs are quoted as a separate product.
Can I get GEICO motorcycle insurance without a motorcycle license?
GEICO says some insurers, including GEICO, may offer coverage while you are learning or waiting for your endorsement, but you need valid ID. A full license or endorsement can lower your rate.
Should I cancel motorcycle insurance in winter?
GEICO advises against it, since comprehensive still covers theft, fire and other damage while the bike is stored, and a lapse can raise your next premium. Ask whether a lower-coverage option is available for the off season instead.
