Our verdict

Mint Mobile is one of the cheapest ways to get service on a major network, with plans from $15 a month, but you must pay for 3, 6 or 12 months upfront, taxes and fees are extra, and 3 and 6 month prices are introductory, so check the regular price before you renew. It is legitimate: it has been owned by T-Mobile since May 2024 and runs on T-Mobile's network. Unlimited users can be slowed after 50 GB a month when the network is busy. Customer service is the most common complaint, so it suits people who are comfortable handling their account online.

Mint Mobile, step by step

  1. Check coverage and your phone

Mint runs on T-Mobile's network, so check T-Mobile coverage where you live and work and confirm your phone is unlocked and compatible.

  2. Pick a data amount and term

Choose 6 GB, 17 GB, 23 GB or Unlimited, then pay for 3, 6 or 12 months upfront. The 12-month price is the lowest regular price.

  3. Activate with eSIM or a SIM card

Order online, activate in the app and port your number. Keep your old account open until the transfer finishes.

  4. Use the 7-day window

If coverage is poor, cancel within 7 days of activation for a full refund of plans bought from Mint directly, minus shipping.

  5. Renew or leave

Before your term ends, check the renewal price, since intro prices end. There is no contract or early termination fee, but prepaid months are generally not refunded after the first 7 days.

Mint Mobile legitimacy and licensing

Yes. Mint Mobile is a real prepaid carrier owned by T-Mobile, which completed its purchase of Mint’s parent company in May 2024. T-Mobile said Mint would keep operating as its own brand and that Ryan Reynolds would stay in his creative role. Service runs on T-Mobile’s network, the same towers T-Mobile’s own customers use.

The catches are in the advertising, not the service. In 2023 the National Advertising Division of BBB National Programs, acting on a Verizon challenge, recommended that Mint stop or change its “$15/mo” Unlimited claim because it did not clearly say the price required paying three months upfront as an intro offer. Mint said it would appeal. Today the plans page states the upfront amounts and which prices are introductory, so read those lines before you buy.

Mint Mobile pricing explained

Mint sells service in blocks. On a 12-month plan you pay $180, $240, $300 or $360 upfront for 6 GB, 17 GB, 23 GB or Unlimited, which works out to $15 to $30 a month, and Mint’s broadband labels say that 12-month price is not an introductory rate. The 3-month and 6-month prices for new customers are introductory: after a 3-month intro, the regular 3-month prices are $25, $35, $45 and $40 a month.

In October 2026 Mint ran an anniversary offer of any 6-month plan for $60 upfront, or $10 a month, for new customers. Taxes and fees are added on top. The labels list a monthly recovery fee of about $1.75 to $2.58, small federal fees and state taxes that vary by location.

How Mint Mobile works and what you get

Every plan includes unlimited talk and text, mobile hotspot and calls to Mexico, Canada and the UK at no extra charge. Hotspot data counts against your monthly allowance; on Unlimited it is capped at 20 GB. When you use up the high-speed data on a limited plan, Mint does not charge overage fees.

Because Mint is a reseller, its customers can get lower priority than T-Mobile’s own postpaid customers when a tower is busy. On Unlimited, Mint says you may notice slower speeds after 50 GB in a month in congested areas, and video streams in standard definition.

What customers say about Mint Mobile

Recurring themes across the review sites and complaint records listed above, not individual quotes.

Common praise

  • Low prices compared with the big carriers, especially on 12-month plans
  • Coverage on T-Mobile's network
  • Paying once a year and not thinking about a bill
  • Easy online and app activation

Common complaints

  • Hard to reach customer service and long waits
  • Problems with number transfers and activation
  • Renewal prices higher than the intro price
  • Slower data when the network is busy

Mint Mobile complaints and how to avoid problems

Mint’s BBB profile shows 2,132 complaints in the last three years and a B- rating, and on Trustpilot 23% of 16,301 reviews are one star. The recurring themes are slow or hard-to-reach support, number transfer and activation problems, and surprise at renewal prices. Many reviewers also praise the price and say service works well once set up.

To avoid trouble, confirm your phone is unlocked before you order, keep your old carrier active until the port finishes, write down the date your term ends, and check the renewal price for your plan. If a billing problem is not fixed, you can file a complaint with the FCC.

Cancellation and refunds

Mint has no contract or early termination fee. Its 7-Day Money Back Guarantee lets you cancel any full phone plan bought on mintmobile.com or in the Mint app within 7 days of activation for a refund of the purchase price, including taxes and fees, but not shipping. Unused, unopened SIM cards can be returned within 10 days. Plans bought at retail stores follow the store’s policy.

After the first 7 days, plan money you prepaid is generally not refunded, so a 12-month plan is a commitment in practice. If you are unsure about coverage, start with a 3-month plan.

Who should skip Mint Mobile

Look elsewhere if T-Mobile coverage is weak where you live or work, if you would rather pay month to month, or if you need a store for help. Heavy data users who stream on cellular may prefer a plan with more priority data or HD video. Families who want one bill with phone financing and perks often do better with a full-service carrier.

Frequently asked questions

What network does Mint Mobile use?

T-Mobile's 5G and 4G LTE network. Coverage is the same as T-Mobile's, but Mint data can be slowed before T-Mobile's own postpaid customers when a tower is busy.

Yes, within 7 days of activation for full plans bought from Mint directly, minus shipping. After that, prepaid plan time is generally not refunded.

Is Mint Mobile good for international use?

Calls to Mexico, Canada and the UK are included. For other countries and roaming, check Mint's international rates before you travel.

Can I keep my phone number with Mint Mobile?

Yes. You can port your number when you activate. Keep your old account open until the transfer is complete so the number is not lost.
